The glance that makes holes in the silver screen

« #5085 : January 07, 2009, 12:48:11 PM »

Bite your tongue. It's true the film goes into high gear only after Sabrina comes back from Paris, but then it careens from joke to joke at speed. The bit where Bogie gets Bill Holden to sit on the champagne glasses always has me almost in stitches. And Audrey was never more winsome--I like her here better than anywhere else. No, this is one of Wilder's finest.
I can name five better Wilder movies. And I don't feel that Bogie really fits in comedies. He can be funny but he hits it best when he's playing a laconic loner who cracks a sarcastic jokes every now and then. And I felt that the story was somewhat cliched, I mean the structure. Somehow none of the characters' actions surprised me. I know it's a comedy but still... But as my rating indicates, I enjoyed it overall.

The Devil's Backbone (2001) - 7/10

But you did not enjoy it enough and I expect the culprit is language. Some of the jokes don't translate.

I fell desperately in love with Audrey during the first half hour of the movie. For that reason alone, I'd never call it boring. O0

I think Bogart was badly miscast, but he was adequate in the part. I think the fact that he got the girl instead of Holden was quite odd, and I quite frankly had been hoping it were the other way around.

A Movie and Sans Soleil - Avante garde crap we had to watch for film class. Bleh. Seems like this will be a rough semester.

I think the odd casting works, it gives the piece an extra bit of quirk. As for Holden not getting the girl--he does end up with Martha Hyer. That's a pretty good consolation prize, in any universe.

Burn After Reading - 8/10
Great movie from the Coens. Brad Pitt was hysterical, and something about John Malkovich saying "FUCK" is also hilarious.

Sure it was. It's a damn action film for god sakes and it's better than any the genre had to offer in years.

If you like shaky cam and choppy editing sure... I guess it is one of the best in a decade full of crap just like it.

Mister Roberts - 7/10 - Entertaining enough although it drags in spots - it's definitely a filmed play with some nice scenery thrown in. Not the worst thing in the world for a film to be, but it does inhibit enjoyment somewhat. Henry Fonda, James Cagney and Jack Lemmon all do fine work - no real complaints on the acting score. I think I can tell which scenes were directed by John Ford (the overwrought burlesque comedy scenes) and they're just as obnoxious as in his other films, but fortunately they're the minority of the film. I also find it interesting to look at as basically a comedy version of The Caine Mutiny. Really liked the ending too, that came out of left field.

You mean the bit where Jack Lemmon takes over the role his mentor can no longer fill? I thought that was laboriously prepared for and predictable (no, I know exactly what you mean; just pulling yer chain >:D)

Well actually I did like the scene where Lemmon finally confronted Cagney, it got the biggest laugh of the film from me. Predictable but funny.

Days of Being Wild (1990) - 7.5/10
I have to admit that I sometimes have problems with recognizing Asian actors and actresses. :-\
