I was rather let down by this film too. I might give it a slightly higher rating but it really wasn't that funny and the second half in particular didn't click. Shakespeare might have been able to pull off the mistaken identity bit but Sturges ain't Shakespeare. Stanwyck is really sexy and Henry Fonda is really great at comedy though, so it's at least worth a look.

I didn't specify that Stanwick is a good contender for the Van Dyke title of worst Englishman impersonation in film history. That's what is irritating and makes the movie absurd and absolutely not funny. If a couple of open vowels didn't do the trick for a stranger like me, I can't imagine the result on anglo-saxon ears.

Yes, but she's not supposed to be an Englishwoman, so that point seems moot.

Bring Me the Head of Alfredo Garcia - 8/10 - Was really something. Warren Oates was great (and Isela Vega was ravishing) and gave what might be one of the best performances I've seen - if nothing else the Peckinpah impersonation is uncanny. The movie's gritty, nightmarish nihilism is really something else; it may not be Peckinpah at his A-game but it has a raw power of desperation all its own.

More to the point, she's supposed to be an American doing a bad impersonation of an Englishwoman, and getting away with it. Again, the absurdity is the source of the humor. Man, if it weren't for that sister joke, I'd be convinced that titoli has absolutely NO sense of humor.

It Happend One Night (1934) - Wonderful performance by Clark Gable, it started out well but by the middle of the film I was glad the film wasn't long. A lot of sexual innuendo surrounded the "Walls of Jericho" and it looks to me Capra deliberately made Claudette's undressing scene more sensual as Clark's character is falling for her. I especially loved Clark's exchange with the bus driver.

The Great Moment -  I doubt Sturges original screenplay could do more to save up the end result. As far as hollywood biopics go is not bad, but it is not to his best standard. 5\10

He gave Lady Eve a 6/10. That's slightly above-average.
