He implies that that are good Sturges films, but as he ticks them off one by one each is found wanting. He's quickly running out of them.

The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button 6.5/10

Lots of postcards and not great pacing. Still manages to be moving.
Although it is not my favorite one of the director, it is the first time I'm moved by Fincher, by the way.

Hobson's Choice - Too many good sentiments, too many dilated scenes, Laughton not always spot on. Still I give it 7\10.

Too many good sentiments

Is this really a complaint? Do you mean sentimentality?

I didn't really like Hobson's Choice though.

So he's left Sturges for Lean, and he wonders what happened to the laughs? I can't wait for him to discover Sacha Guitry.

Lean only did two comedies. Blithe Spirit was great but as said above Hobson's Choice didn't quite work with me.

I can't wait for Titoli to watch The Seventh Seal and then complain about how unfunny it is. ;D

The Seventh Seal is funny. Or at least it's got funny moments.

I thought about it today. May be the biggest flaw of the movie is that it tries to talk about too many themes (death, meaning of life, goals, responsabilities, so pretty much everything about life... and also XXth century as a whole, with its history). Things that have been evoqued in many movies (and books...) so far, but here they have the opportunity to handle this from a weird standpoint (Benjamin Button's). The point is they don't really talk about any of that, they just quiclky go through it.

The Passionate Friends - Promising at first but then it degenerates into trivial melodrama. 6\10

Madeleine - http://nothingiswrittenfilm.blogspot.com/2008/09/lean-quest-madeleine.html
The Passionate Friends - http://nothingiswrittenfilm.blogspot.com/2008/08/passionate-friends.html

What's with the sudden Lean interest? I wouldn't exactly call Madeleine a thriller although the cinematography and editing are very noir-ish.
