Rather, Fellini's "successes" tend to be less interesting than Lean's movies generally. Nights of Cabiria being the one exception that immediately springs to mind.

No, it's just that is playing it safe. But a Fellini's failure is much more interesting than a Lean success.

pretty much

No, it's just that is playing it safe.

If you take a look at Lean's filmography I'd hardly say that was the case.

Bom yeoreum gaeul gyeoul geurigo bom (2003) "Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring" - 8/10
Perhaps a bit pretentious and obvious but still beautiful.

Is this that Korean movie? A friend gave it to me on DVD for Christmas one year, and I could only make it through to Summer. Why don't the Koreans know how to make decent movies?

Infernal Affairs (2002) - 7.5/10
The main distinction between this and The Departed is that this is more hip and MTV whereas TD is more more on the street level. IA has a good plot, sure, but TD has also great characters.

Murder By Death - 9/10 - Excellent detective spoof with a marvellous ensemble cast, including Peter Falk, Elsa Lanchester, Peter Sellers, David Niven and James Coco playing spoofs of pretty much every literary detective imaginable; also with Truman Capote, Maggie Smith, Alec Guinness, Eileen Brennan and Estelle Winwood (and a young James Cromwell). Exceptionally witty script by Neil Simon and great performances all around; a real treat.

If you'd said 8 1/2 and La Strada I might have been inclined to take you seriously. But La dolce vita is insufferable and I will never suffer it again.
