You've really surprised me this time. I guess maybe this is the Hitchcock film for people who don't like Hitchcock films.

Django - 8.5/10
Compared to Leone's westerns - better than Fistful, though not as good as the others. Not nearly as good as The Great Silence either, but still a fucking great movie.

I enjoyed Django far more than The Great Silence, a film which left a bad taste in my mouth. The sheer madness of Django, if incoherent at times, was something to behold.

Australia (2008) - 6.5/10
Well, it was a rather entertaining 165 minutes but I don't think I'll ever watch it again.

I have to admit my rating went down a bit on a second viewing, at least of the second half of the picture. The first half is absolutely brilliant though.

Yes, that's it, exactly.

Love the first half. It loses its way after that.

care to elaborate?

the only issue I have is that nothing really materializes with Lettieri's subplot. other than that, I think it's pretty consistent.

I find it kinda slow going throughout actually.

Perhaps it is blasphemy but I enjoy the 1995 near shot for shot remake much better. It has the steamy sex scenes and the pacing gets the show going a lot quicker. Plus the climax (Rudy V.S. Doc) is handled in a more creative matter.
My only complaint is Baldwin isn't an action hero, so the reasoning behind giving him the Steve Mcqueen role must be drug related.

I contemplated on walking out during the first half hour with its silly comedy elements and overall cartoonish feel. Luckily I didn't because I got to see the cattle drive which was well put together.
When they get the meat to town I was ready to go home but all of the sudden the film turns into Pearl Harbour 2 and my eye lids started to feel heavier after that.

6/10

I may have seen bits of the remake on tv but I really have no desire to sit and watch that movie.

as far as the original, I liked very much but I enjoyed every peckinpah movie I've seen to some degree, flaws or no flaws. I thought it moved at a brisk pace, but I think junior bonner moves quickly too (despite the overlong rodeo scenes), so I guess I really like Sam and always enjoy what is occurring on screen.

note: haven't seen The Deadly Companions, Noon Wine, The Killer Elite, Convoy and The Osterman Weekend.

I think I'm with FC on this one (though I haven't seen the remake). The main thing that makes it 8/10 rather than 10/10 for me is the slow pace. (Luckily this is the SLWB so I don't have to hear any "short attention span" shit.) And the climax is kinda unsatisfactory; too short and easy. But as my rating indicates, I still enjoyed the movie overall.

Lola (1961) - 8.75/10
Anything else from Jacques Demy I should see? I've seen The Umbrellas of Cherbourg and loved it.

I prefer La baie des anges to Lola, Les demoiselles de Rochefort to Cherbourg.
