I blame Ken Russell for the BDB fiasco, and Saltzman for hiring him. It's also possible they could have done better with one of the other Deighton books, or by ignoring the story and use only the title (which is what they mostly did with Ipcress).

Can't see anything to blame Russell with, his direction is faultless and quite tame by his standards. It's the whole concept which is wrong: the cinematic HP is not an open spaces animal and the stories must follow suit. His repartees are memorable, but how can he deliver them to a Litvinian?

Sorry what?

I don't know what part the actor you mentioned is playing in BDB.

Is that another movie in the Harry Palmer series?

It is, and it isn't.

You can decide by yourself, I suggest you save yourself the trouble and time and go for the B option.

Crash - 2/10 - The Cronenberg version, not the thing that won an Oscar. God I hated it.

I started out not liking it much, but then in the middle it suddenly struck me how funny it was. I'm sure the humor was all unintentional, but no matter. I do pity those, however, who take the film seriously.

I didn't find it the least bit amusing, personally. But I suppose you're entitled to your opinion.

I didn't know about these two other ones, about to be released together on dvd.

 Thanx for the heads-up.

Hadn't heard of those, either. They're made-for-TV films, aren't they?

I loved it too.
Have the dvd but haven't gotten around to watching it yet.

I love it, man.  I love it too.

As for some recent movies I've seen..

Slumdog Millionaire -- Complete Shit / 10

Le Doulos -- 8.5/10.  Man, brilliant storytelling.

The Holy Mountain -- Still a big mother-effing 10/10.

Once Upon a Time in the West -- Flawless / 10.  By the third time I watched this movie, I was convinced it was the best film ever made.  It has improved with every viewing since.

Turns out they were made for TV, yeah. I didn't know nothing about them too, until I accidentally caught them on TV back in the late 90s. Of course I had absolutely no idea it was Harry Palmer himself, I just thought it was some ''trying to get back onto the old path of glory'' Michael Caine spy flick. You know how it is, you never expect too much from movies you never heard nothing of, that you catch on TV in two hours after midnight. Anyway, as I was reading something else and the TV had the tone lowered at first I didn't pay much attention to what was going on on the screen, until I've heard someone call him ''Harry''. So I thought, funny thing, that it could maybe be some kind of parody about the old days (?). But no, to my horror after a few minutes I found out it was Harry Palmer himself, in the most stupid of the stupidest post golden age of spy flicks spy flick. Like, if you would, helped by a team of specially trained baboons, try to come up with an intelligence insulting, minimalistic and stereotypical plot set in the countries of the ex-Soviet Union and China, embracing every cliche characteristic to spy flicks in general and a train ride going from Europe to the Far East, you wouldn't come anywhere near the shitness of BTB. And the second one is even worse, if you can actually believe it. Idiotic plot, boring characters played by unknown actors, TV quality production... Sorry Harry, you really didn't deserve this kind of treatment.

So, I guess, if you're a HC HP fan than you will eventually decide to buy the other two movies as well, in order to have them all five, but shit, I honestly can't think why would anyone else buy them for a price of more than 1 - 2 bucks. Together.

Incidentally I'm listening to the soundtrack right now.
