Your Friends & Neighbors
(1998) - 7/10. Not
my
friends and neighbors, surely. The screenplay is funny, but the characters are strictly from Planet LaBute. Always nice to see Nastassja Kinski, though.

13 Rue Madeleine
- Good first part, lame second one. But the final shot of Cagney laughing equals the more famous (though akin) finale of
White Heat
. Actually it is one of the most terrifiyng shots I ever saw. Consequently a must-see. 7\10

The Crossing Guard
- I bought this because of Nicholson. I hadn't noticed it was a Sean Penn movie, otherwise I'd have passed on. But Nicholson's (great: probably one of his greatest, though marred sometime by his mannerisms) performance makes this watchable, though not my kind of movie. I see that Houston had a few nominations for this: I think this shows instead how one can be 30 years in a business and not understanding a thing of it. 6\10

Chronique d'un été (Paris 1960) (1961)
"Chronicle of a Summer: Paris, 1960" - 8.5/10
Very real people and situations, but I didn't like the scene where a woman walks down a street talking about her father; that felt false. And I think the Saint-Tropez bit is unnecessary.

Chariots of Fire (1981)
- 6.7/10
OK, calm and subtle historical sport drama, but the lack of a grand finale downgrades it for a few degrees.

Vertigo
- 7/10 - I have roughly the same feelings after a rewatch as I did after the first. The real meat of the movie is in the last half hour, everything up to that is pretty disposable. Will try to write a more in-depth review later on.

Oh, c'mon, Joe,
predictable
would have been having the Foxx character recovering his talent, then putting on a crowd-pleasing concert at the end that validates his years of hardship. I was really glad they didn't go that route.

OK predictable up to THAT point, lol.
The problem is that we don't have smell-o-vison yet, I was workiing for the State of NY all winter and some of the down and outers that the state hires smell, not just of BO but they smell like shit. Get them close to a heat source and they reek. That is the dimension that's lacking in a film depicting the homeless.

Very true. One can also level such criticism at films like
Slumdog Millionaire
, and at all historical dramas.
