The insanity. How is the first episode better than the third (other than it has the best sword fight in the history of cinema)?

Titoli must like Jar Jar Binks. I mean who doesnt?

d (other than it has the best sword fight in the history of cinema)?

That's the reason.

Ep. 2 only has the final 20 minutes going for it

Ep. 3 has nothing going for it.

EP. 1 - 7/10

EP. 2 - 6/10

EP. 3 - 4/10

Ep. 3 has nothing going for it.
I found the final fight over the lava stream very good. And the opening action scene was great too if memory serves me right. Plus I liked the overall darker atmosphere. But about ep.2 I can't remember anything else than that it had Yoda swordfighting...

Because Episode 2 is the WORST fucking Star Wars movie next to the new animated one. I think it goes something like... V, IV, VI, III, I, II in order of best to worst for me.

That sounds about right to me.

The Shining (1980) - 8/10 - A great effort by Kubrick, one of his best films. Not really scary but it is unsettling and beautifully made. If there is any major criticism of the film it's that Kubrick allows Jack Nicholson a bit too much free rein for his madness, but otherwise it's a damn solid film.

A bit long, though, wouldn't you say?

It's funny what King said about this movie. That he didn't like it because it's not at all like the horror movies he used to go see as a kid. Nobody jumping from behind a corner to scare the shit out of you or stuff like that. He noticed that Kubrick very much relied on lighting, camera angles and editing in creating a scary atmosphere but saw that as a bad thing. How retarded is that!

I can't put my finger on what it is that scares me shitless everytime I see this movie but it does and that's why I think it's a masterpiece. Almost all other horror films require a kind of a "I'm being tricked but lets play the ball anyway" attitude, but The Shining doesn't. If I just happen to see a scene of it, I'm disturbed right away.

Abandoned Ship (Seven Waves Away) caught most of this Tyrone Power film today on TCM, not bad at all, one lifeboat 26 survivors. Based on a true story, 7/10

Perhaps not the greatest horror movie of all time but certainly the best Haunted House movie of all time.

House on Haunted Hill (original) with Vincent Price - 9/10

I loved the atmosphere throughout the whole film, it's that good old-fashioned classy horror. I get the feeling the horror genre became guts and gore due to the directors' interpretation of the word "horror" and the trend became to disgust rather than to instill the good old fear of the dark, etc. I personally prefer the classy horror flicks (that tend to have creepier scenes) over the gushing gore of slasher flicks.
