and ST (2009) takes itself seriously.

You mean to say, the original series didn't take itself seriously?

THE READER
have not decided what i think of this yet.
Winslet nekkid is an automatic 5 points.
the story was certainly original and unpredictable
but the film dragged a bit towards the end.

rate it later...

WARLOCK
this is a typical glossy Cinemascope western that needed to be much more gritty.
As long as Fonda was on screen I  loved it (Widmark was good but has been better)
a bit above the average for its era

It did, but it was a series. TV and cinema are entirely different forms, with different strengths.

Westbound (1959) - 2/10. This film is sooo stoooopid, but it does have Karen Steele. The two points are for the assets she brings to the picture. http://www.dvdbeaver.com/film2/DVDReviews45/westbound.htm

Me too. Except that ST (1997) was brilliant satire, and ST (2009) takes itself seriously. And therein lies the difference between good film and bad.

I agree. I think what made Starship Troopers so great was precisely that it didn't take itself seriously. Compared with Star trek, Starship was much much better but Star Trek wasn't too bad.. even if it did take itself more seriously than it should have.

I dont think any of Verhoevans films from the 90's are supposed to be taken seriously.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past 5/10.  A scaraficial Mothers Day viewing, a chick flick and one that was not that very well done.

Hostel (2005) - 6/10
The idea of such a place/club is more disturbing than the movie itself - not least because I find such a place/club highly believable (wasn't it inspired by a real website or something?). The story is rather straightforward and even dull towards the end. And the gore was ineffective on me because a) I knew to expect it b) it was so over the top that all I could think was "hmm...pretty well done effects...". But overall it's an OK movie which would be 1/10 better without the stupid humor. Why insert bad intentional humor in a horror movie which, against all odds, doesn't have any unintentional humor in the first place? Well, the chicks move my rating up by 1/10...

Ocean's Twelve - 2\10 (I'd give it 1 were it not for Zeta-Jones).

Two Mules For Sister Sarah - 6/10 - A bit of a disappointment. Starts out really strong with lots of great back-and-forth between Clint and an unusually attractive Shirley Maclaine (whom I usually find rather mousy, as charming as she can be), with some great dialogue to go with it. When the actual plot gets going about halfway through, however, the movie more or less dies, slowing to a painful crawl and the final battle isn't nearly good enough for all the draggy build-up. Morricone's score isn't anything special either; it seems like he decided to slightly tweak some of his Dollars trilogy themes and call it a day. Still, it's worth a look at least for Clint and Shirley, who have great chemistry together.

Ghosts of Girlfriends Past 5/10.

I read in a review that the ex-girlfriends weren't even ghosts... so what's the point?

mmm but there's a difference too, when it comes to films that don't take themselves seriously... Starship Troopers just happens to be great because it's satyrical.. not because it's lowbrow.

Man on the Moon (1999) - 9/10
Some of the jokes loose their effect on a second viewing but overall it's just great. One of the best of Jim Carrey.

For Whom the Bells Toll - 6-7/10 - If any classic movie deserves a remake, it's definitely this film. The movie has a lot going for it, particularly the great action scenes (the movie's obvious influence on Bridge on the River Kwai and Guns of Navarone is noteworthy as well), particularly the final battle, and some ice location photography (when we actually venture outdoors, of course); in that department it holds it reasonably well. However, other elements are VERY badly dated, badly matching its beautiful location shots with some obvious sets, endless scenes of talking (particularly the interminable first half), annoying and intrusive music, and the odd casting of Russian-Americans as the Spanish rebels (with Akim Tamaroff bearing a striking similarity to Bluto from the Popeye cartoons). Gary Cooper is tailor-made for the lead, Ingrid Bergman is lovely and  gives a truly great and refreshing performance. I liked it a good bit but while watching I couldn't help but thinking that a modern director could do a lot more with the material.
