Tried to watch The Name of the Rose today but the DVD was scratched. :-P

Did you feel the presence of The Unholy?

Family Video IS pretty evil. Evil

Agree with you on The Score, I think I'd rate it a bit lower though.

The Innocents (1961) - 10/10

*Le gasp*
One of the best horrors ever. It's not like you'd see anything disgusting, it's all about suspense. Of course, it uses a lot of Victorian gothic clichés, but they work perfectly with a beautiful black & white cinematography, and a perfect cast.

Made after Henry James' Turn of the Screw, it follows the novel quite faithfully (unusual for american movies), and having Truman Capote's hand in it, it's really disturbing. What I wonder about is how could they fool the censors? I mean, it has a boy and an adult woman kissing. Twice. And it hints way, way more. Abusive ghosts, secrets in the past, strange dreams...

Watch it - or better read it first - it's really haunting.

This is what I consider a good horror. You're afraid of what you don't see. Who's afraid of boring zombies/mass murderers/aliens?

I've also seen a later adaptation, but that was a Czech(!) opera film with English/American singers (and Czech actors). Also very good, but not half as haunting as this. Maybe because it was shot in color, or because I laughed at the constant fake fog around Miss Jessel (ghost dressed in dramatic black, usually walking around the lake she has died in). But that's worth watching too if you get the chance - it has a truly scary music, by my favourite composer Benjamin Britten.

One of the best english movies ever.
The short novel by James of course, though he defined it simply "a potboiler", is a masterpiece of ambiguity by a writer who made ambiguity his trademark and it spawned a whole critical debate on what is the real sense of the whole plot which remains impervious to a single interpretation.

Yeah, good fun. I wish Claudia's role was bigger (I would have prefered her as the housekeeper). Have you seen the remake, Welcome to Collinwood? It has a good cast (for the most part) but is pretty much a shot for shot remake. Pretty pointless but enjoyable enough, I suppose.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre. What did you think of the script?

And yet the film has a clear prejudice. But how could it not? Cinema by its very nature eschews ambiguity.

Black Rain (1989) - 5/10

I like Ridley Scott's visuals but the movie is overlong and quite honestly boring after multiple viewings.

Sorry but can't this be said of most Ridley Scott films?

Batman Begins - 5/10 - Rather a disappointment. Too much throat-clearing exposition and character establishment, that's rushed through and poorly done. The story is kind of lame, with uninteresting bad guys (Evil Secret Society #4,503,401 coming up!) and a laughable plot to rule the world. The script is too full of self-important, pseudo-intellectual pontificating on the nature of Fear which gets tiresome, and lots of cheesy dialogue that The Dark Knight mostly avoided. Action scenes are okay but nothing overly special. Nice cinematography and direction for what it's worth. Music is bland and repetitive. The cast is mediocre: Bale is bland as always, Oldman and Caine contribute mostly wheezy comic relief, Wilkinson and Murphy are underused and uninteresting, Freeman's role is completely superfluous, and Holmes actually made me pine for Maggie Gyllenhaal. Neeson has the best performance in the cast even though he's playing Doomed Mentor #4,731 on his resume. Most of you know that I'm not exactly the biggest fan of The Dark Knight, but it's miles better than this film, even with its myriad flaws.
