Not sure I'm up for an in-depth argument but I would strongly disagree with that. As usual.

Marathon man (1976): 8/10 Well paced and interesting all through the movie. The acting is pretty spot on with Laurence Olivier really taking the cake as zvell. For the most part i don't care Olivier (of what i'v seen) but he made such an intimidating and fascinating villian here. The are some convoluted plot points here and there but overall, its good stuff.

I will add to my Lord Jim comments that hearing James Mason tell someone to "Shut your gob!" is one of the most exquisite pleasures cinema has to offer.

The New World - Great movie, how come everyone hates it?

Days of Heaven > Badlands = The New World > The Thin Red Line

Punch-Drunk Love - it's not nearly as great as Boogie Nights, Magnolia or TWBB but pretty damn good

Someone held a gun to your head? George Lucas paid you? You have a passion for ducks?

duckophilia?

Clearly groggs, your standard for filmmaking has been raised to unreasonable proportions by the Rusty Saga. If you would just sit through "Howard" again (at least 3-4 times), read the original comics (again 3-4 times) and buy the merchandise, you should be able comeback to the film with a fresh perspective  Smiley

Well, Rusty didn't talk and wasn't a midget in a costume. That's one thing those film have going for them.

I knew about the Howard comics but there's merchandise!?

Defiance - 8/10 - Starts out pretty bleh and formulaic but gets better as it goes along. Great acting, well-staged action scenes mostly free of the damned shaky cam, and nice character/story development, though lack of any real antagonist was perhaps a mark against it. On the whole though, it far exceeded my fairly low expectations.

I still need to see Badlands, but I agree with your ordering besides that. How pumped are you for The Tree of Life?
