I haven't seen 3AM, but you should see NIGHT ON EARTH, if you haven't.

No, but I plan to. Wink

The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean - 6-7/10 - You would think a Western directed by John Huston, written by John Milius and starring Paul Newman would have to be a great film, right? Well, sadly this isn't the case. The movie has a lot of strong points - Newman gives a phenomenal performance, mostly-good supporting cast, wonderfully rustic dialogue, nice score by Maurice Jarre - but the movie seems a bit out of focus and borderline incoherent at times. The film's episodic, irreverent nature is enjoyable up to a point but it doesn't seem to be in service of much anything, and the good scenes (the opening shootout at the bar, Stacey Keach's cameo) stand on their own rather than creating a great whole; the movie just seems adrift and out-of-focus with good bits fading in and out at random. The stuff with the bear is just dumb, particularly the lousy (though apparently pre-requisite for the era) musical interlude. I like the idea of the climax but the build-up is forced and as staged it doesn't come off well. And the ending with Ava Gardner belatedly appearing in the flesh is cornball as all get out. Perhaps the problem is the director; Huston can direct great Westerns but this isn't one of them; his playful late-career nature doesn't seem particularly suitable to the material at hand. Not bad but it could have been a lot better in the hands of, say, Sam Peckinpah at his creative peak.

You nailed it, Grogs, although I'm inclined to award it a "7." Don't forget that great bit by Tony Perkins!

Lost in Translation (2003) - 6.5/10

The love story seemed naive and childish but the stranger-in-a-foreign-country/culture homework was well done.

Didn't really think there was a love story. More like a "like" story. The ending bites, though.

Mamma Mia! (2008) - 2.5/10

The idea of taking a bunch of respected faces of cinema that sing like a herd of drunken hippopotamuses, and actually make them do it on screen (for good money), is something on the borders of ingenuity and insanity.

The movie made around 600 million $ (on a 52 mil budget) worldwide, becoming the highest grossing film musical of all time.

Cadillac Records (2008) - 4/10

Uneventful biopic full of stale dramatic elements and fusty characters. Stagnant.

I haven't seen either of those Dust, but I've learned that it's pointless to watch any musical that's come out in the last decade, or century for that matter.
