I myself don't care much for Ran, in fact, I don't really like any of AK's color films. Red Beard, a work of mixed success, was probably the high-water mark of his cinema; everything afterwards was on an ebb tide.

Well Tuco, I definitely had a problem with the pacing of Seven Samurai, but that may have been due to sheer length. Plus that film gave way too much time to Toshiro Mifune's obnoxious clowning, which got old really fast. Ran wasn't so slow as to be boring but the Lear-in-the-storm scenes just went on way too damned long (and the stuff with Sue and the blind guy didn't help either). I loved the conflict with the brothers and I think the film should have focused on that; Hidetora just wasn't a compelling character after he went bananas. Granted I'm not the biggest fan of King Lear either, were I to be perfectly honest.

Not sure what my next Kurosawa will be, probably Yojimbo for FOD reasons, but I'll have to think it over.

Afterwards, watch Sanjuro.

I think it's better than Yojimbo.
I think the only person who agrees with me is DJ.

Crank (2006) and Crank: High Voltage (2009) - 4 - 4.5 / 10 (each)

Exactly the load of idiotic horseshit I was expecting.

But:

a) Is Jason Statham the man or what? He's been playing basically the same character for the past 10 years. This kind of wise-n-tough guy in (neo) crime stories, though not the classic charisma driven tough guy but some sort of over-the-top MTV-ish version. In the ''honorary character (non)development overloading category'' he's to be considered a serious contender to: Scwartzie, Dolphie, Van Dammie, Sly, Norris and the likes from the 80s and 90s. Snatch, The Transporter 1/2/3, Revolver, Crank 1/2, The Bank Job, etc. I really couldn't tell what's the difference. Though this doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing; he's making a career for himself, and the movies are making good money - mission accomplished, but it's interesting to me I haven't heard anybody mentioning this so far. More a curiosity than a complaint; like I give a shit who's gonna play who and how many times.

b) I thought the movie was overloaded with crap already, until they discovered new frontiers when he survives the fall from the helicopter - lol. Not only he couldn't have possibly survived it, even in a movie like this, but the ambulance guys wouldn't be able to distinguish him from the guy on whose car he felt. Or from his car. Or from the asphalt.

c) Two really good jokes in the series, one per each movie. In the first one when he's driving through the mall and talking on the cell phone with that doctor - the best sequence of that type since The Blues Brothers. In the second movie when he says ''No ebola for me today, thanks.'' to Ling Bai's character.

Your point is what, exactly? Your sense of humor is as dead as titoli's? Well, you've convinced me.

Well, what are we supposed to do with a statement that is virtually synonymous with: "Those old Roadrunner cartoons really suck. No WAY could Wile E. Coyote survive all those falls!"
