Actually it ends the question.

You're right.
I'll keep this in mind for future talk of Sanjuro.

Desert Fury (1947) - 8/10. I saw this originally a couple years ago in Seattle when Eddie "The Czar of Noir" Muller brought it with his traveling show (I probably reviewed it at the time in the film noir thread). I got tired of waiting for it to appear on DVD in R1, so I ordered the Australian import, and that's the basis for this second viewing. The Technicolor is fabulous, worth the price of admission alone. Although this is often considered a noir, I don't see what it has to do with black and white crime films of the 40s. Sure, the cast is from noir: Lancaster, Lizabeth Scott, John Hodiak, Mary Astor, and "introducing Wendell Corey." But that's where the similarities end. The story is about a young woman (Scott) who has to decide between the hunky, straight-shootin' deputy sheriff (Lancaster), and the darkly sinister gambler (Hodiak, during his silly mustache phase). Where's the crime? In fact, criminal activity surfaces at the end, but until then it's pretty much a film about relationships (the one between Hodiak and Corey is a puzzler). In spite of its modern setting, it's probably most accurate to call the film a Western. Everybody keeps going to town to lay bets at the Purple Sage. There are some horses: at one point, hero and heroine go gamboling across the desert on their mounts. There's even a shoot-out at the end. Not a great Western, mind, but it does have its moments. And it's fun to see Ms Scott in color for a change.

Twilight (2008) - 6/10
Surprisingly good.

Oldboy (2003) - 7/10
Not as good as I expected. A bit far fetched.

Stardust (2007) - 7.5/10
I was entertained.

Child Bride (1938) bizarre thirties film against child marriage that comes off as an exploitation film, Shirley Mills the 12 year old star (two years later she played Ruth Joad in Grapes of Wrath) has a nude swim segment in the old swimin' hole with a leering moonshiner peeping at her, and it also contains brief flashes of mature female breast. You scratch your head wonder how it made it past the censors. The depiction of some of the hillbillies especially another midget moonshiner is hilarious. Nowadays it would probably rate as child porn for most.

This from Wikipedia on the subject: "Some films produced outside the mainstream studio system during this time did flout the conventions of the code, such as Child Bride (1938), which featured a nude scene involving 12-year-old actress Shirley Mills." I've highlighted the key point. This was essentially, if I understand correctly, an independent film. I'm not sure how it was distributed, but it probably didn't play in regular theaters. During this period, the studios and theaters were vertically integrated, so something produced outside the normal system would not have a regular venue. I don't know that much about the subject, maybe there were independent theaters even then. Or maybe such films were rented out to Lion's Clubs meetings and church groups.

EDIT: Just found this comment at IMDb:
Quote
Much like Reefer Madness this pretends to be a moral plea to remove injustice but it's merely an excuse to get around the Hays office and show a lot of cleavage and violence. These films got away with this by playing mostly small towns and roadshows or one night midnight shows in the larger cities. They were in and out before the law knew what hit em.

481 pages, god damn.  I've been off this board too long.

The Harder They Come, 6.5/10.  Mediocre but entertained me.  It would be a five but I give plus one for the soundtrack, which is some real good stuff, and another .5 for the scene in the middle where they are all sitting in a theatre watching the machine gun scene in Django!  That took me by surprise, and then they flashed back to it at the finale.
