Mutiny on the Bounty (1935) - 8/10 - Great acting, a wonderfully constructed story with very little fat (though a lot of historical liberties), some fine direction and slick editing. It's pretty cool, and my interest is peaked concerning the quality of the 1962 version with Brando and Howard.

When Harry Met Sally... (1989) - 6/10

A popcorn flick, despite what its name says, can't run the whole time only on popcorn; you have to throw in a peanut, pretzel or a sip of soda at some point. But still, how this so-called ''modern romantic comedies'' can be, this is definitely watchable.

The Wreck of the Mary Deare - 5/10 - A lousy, yawn-inducing filmed play that moves at a glacial pace and never thaws into anything good. It gets a few points for a nice score and cool performances from Chuck Heston and Gary Cooper but otherwise it's a good way to induce hibernation. And most chilling of all: lots of underwater scenes! Also amusing to see a very young Richard Harris as a cold-blooded asshole (though he doesn't have any scenes opposite Heston aside from trying to harpoon him).

Bringing Out the Dead (1999) - 8/10

Underappreciated gem.

Battle of the River Platte/Pursuit of the Graf Spee - 5/10 - A boring Powell-Pressburger film? WOW! I will say in its defense that some parts of it look very nice - gorgeous Technicolor as one would expect from these gentlemen, often so vivid that it looks like a documentary. And the movie does have the cameraderie among fighting men, even those on opposite sides, that Colonel Blimp much more successfully featured. However, the movie largely plays like a frigid docudrama rather than a compelling war film, with surprisingly phony battle scenes given the use of real warships, a pace that redefines glacial (sorry for using this pun twice in a row, but if the snowshoe fits...), particularly the ludicrously-drawn out intro scene, a near-complete lack of character development, and an overall sense of frosty ennui. The Montevideo scenes seem much more Powell-esque than the rest of the film, and manage somehow to be more entertaining than the battles. Even the name cast (Peter Finch, Anthony Quayle, Patrick Macnee, William Squire, Bernard Lee, a young Christopher Lee) is pretty nondescript. Not much to recommend this one - it's best to put it on ice.

But don't you find the rolling down the hill at the end rather silly?

If the rest of the film is perfect, Jinkies, shouldn't you let the ending slide?
