Groggy's review summed up my thoughts, more of less. Maybe I'd be a little more negative.
And that pretty much sums things for me. Shall we call "consensus" and go home?

That's what you get, Drink, for being such an annoying Melville fanboy.

I tend to feel generous with movies I find entertaining even if they have significant flaws.

Am I the only one around who thinks this movie is one of the 10 greatest films of all time?

Probably not, but don't let that stop us from ridiculing you.

No offense, noodles, but I would hope so.

I hate you all.

As a Comedy Western its good, better than most, and the Chief Dan George segments are great.  Wink

Do you mean the Washita Massacre? That was a great scene. Too bad the rest of the movie wasn't more like it.

Barton Fink I liked it. Didn't expect the second half to go in that direction.

Lady Vengeance I'm liking this one a bit more than Oldboy but just a bit.

The Furies - 8/10 - I checked this out due to the strong recommendation of someone on IMDB. I thought it was an excellent film on the whole. The film has an extremely noirish look and feel (all-time great cinematography by Victor Milner) but the plot is much more melodramatic than most of what exists in that genre. Not a criticism, just an observation. The film was much more plot and character-driven than most Westerns and in this case it works really well. Barbara Stanwyck is at her best; I'm not sure I find her physically beautiful but she has a certain je ne sais que that makes her really appealing. She nails her character as a mixture of tough, neurotic and needy, basically a spoiled brat. Huston was good, much more restrained than other performances of his I've seen, and the rest of the cast acquits themselves well (I liked seeing Miss Danvers from Rebecca getting scissors in her face). The subplot with the Mexican ranchers was great and I almost wish that was the main focus of the film rather than a sideline. The film has a screenplay bristling with stilted dialogue, and I think the ending is awfully abrupt and seems out of character with the rest of the film (though at least it gets in a tiny bit of foreshadowing), but on the whole a nice movie, and moves up to at least #3 (possibly higher) on my list of Manns.

I got this on my Netflix que at about #49 position.

I'd comment but that would depend on what you have ahead of it.
