Disclosure (1994) - 4 or 5 / 10

Basically crap but some of the sex jokes are really funny.

And some things really do get better with time.

. . . use of Wadi Rumm as a significant location - which means I'll never be able to watch Lawrence of Arabia again without thinking of giant robot balls.
Doesn't this mean you'll be issuing a fatwa against Michael Bay?

I hadn't given it much though, but it seems the only reasonable solution now.

Avatar 2.5/5
Ok. I'll probably watch the first time from time to time. More details in the Avatar thread. My advice: see it with the glasses or don't see it at all.

Violent Cop (1989) - 9/10. Kitano in his prime. The faux Morricone score works well. http://www.hulu.com/watch/116033/violent-cop

Thanks for that link, Jenkins. I have wanted to see that for a while now.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre. What did you think of the script?

Dances With Smurfs (2009) - 1/10. It has to be said: even in 3D, CGI that moves continues to look like shite. I only found the 3D at all interesting when human subjects were in the frame; the 3D cartoons did nothing for me at all. And, of course, it is impossible to feel empathy for cartoons. Who cares if Stephen Lang is gonna blow them up? Stevie himself was pretty good, though--I give the film a point for his iconic portrayal of a Marine badass. Too bad at the end he had to default to the Jeff Bridges rock-em-sock-em robots role, as per the villain in Iron Man. Where's Cameron's creativity? Maybe he should go back to stealing from Harlan Ellison.

I haven't seen the movie yet, but I wonder why Cameron opted for CGI instead of a realistic alternative:

How can the blue video game character people and humans co-exist on screen? It would have to look terrible.

Why be realistic when you're trying to tout "the future" of cinema?

I came across an article yesterday which pointed out (as if it needed pointing out) that the film is basically variation #4,051 of the White Guilt Fantasy where a virtuous white guy rescues a downtrodden race of noble savages from utter destruction. Dances With Wolves is the obvious example, but I'd add anything from Lawrence of Arabia to The Last Samurai to Lord Jim to Pocahontas to Blood Diamond to Amistad to District 9 as having basically the same plot. This being the case (I have to assume), it shows that Cameron is a gutless pussy who doesn't have the guts for any originality beyond purty pictures.

The Terminator movies (I and II of course) were kind of original...
