Sideways (2004) - 8.5/10
I was never eager to see this one; indie movie that won an Oscar (and was nominated for more) Tongue But I hadn't laughed this loud at a movie in a long time!

Play Dirty (1968) - 7.5/10

André De Toth's last picture is a gritty war drama and sort of a dry cynical version of The Dirty Dozen. I liked it, though I felt from time to time a little ''style'' wouldn't have hurt at all.

Network - 6/10 - Hmm. Some really great individual scenes, particularly Holden's confrontation with his wife, the cast is superb (and I'm finding Faye Dunaway hotter with each film I see her in), and the television satire certainly remains pertinent today. Personally though, I found it all rather tiresome after awhile, its cynicism being of the abrasive rather than charming sort, and it goes into loony land when they decide to actually kill Howard. Howard Beale is a one-note character whose schtick gets old really fast; the stuff with the Symbionese Liberation Army clones was much more amusing (and believable). Of course, I'm not surprised that the Academy chose a scenery-chewing ham role for its Oscar, especially one whose occupant just died (sound familiar?). For that matter, if it was meant as a comedy it wasn't really funny. If it was meant as a straight drama, then it works fine. Either way, something of a disappointment.

The International - 8/10 - A solid thriller. It has the paranoia, feel and intricate plotting of '70s thrillers down pat, better than something like Michael Clayton (which tried same but failed), and has a nice mixture of action and suspense. The film is a bit slow at first, but it definitely picks up around the hour mark, though certain plot threads seem to be left hanging (eg. why the Italian politician gets whacked). Nice cinematography, good action scenes, serviceable-to-good cast (always nice to see Armin Mueller-Stahl). Definitely worth a look.

Unruhige Nacht (1958) A german movie on the war on the East. The plot hinges on a chapelain who must assist a deserter before he is shot for desertion out of love for a ukrainian peasant girl. Slow moving, cheap looking and ridiculous in view of what were the real relationships between german soldiers and ukrainian folks (expecially women). 3\10

The shootout is pretty good, although the logic of it is pretty questionable.

Red Dust (1932) - 6/10
What's the big deal with Jean Harlow? She looks like a two penny whore.

Talks like one too. She's never done anything for me either. And as a matter of fact, I can't think of a single one of her films that I'd consider either important or interesting. Send her to the memory hole.

The Graduate - 5/10 - 2nd viewing. Still boring, unfunny, pointless, and Benjamin's still obnoxious.

Agreed, except your rating is too high. Don't you ever give anythings a "2"?

I save 2's for movies like Transformers 2.

The movie has some nice technical work and I liked the Simon and Garfunkel songs more this time. Plus Anne Bancroft. That's enough for a mediocre 5.
