King Solomon's Mines (1937) - 6/10. The inspiration, no doubt, for the Indiana Jones pictures, but also Zulu and Herzog's Cobra Verde. Not only is Africa stranger than you know, it's stranger that you can know. Or it would be if Paul Robeson wasn't on hand to help everybody feel more comfortable with a few rousing (authentically African) Hollywood Spirituals. Robeson was probably an inspiration of sorts too--for Kirby's Black Panther. Anyway, it's action-adventure from 73 years ago that still works: http://www.hulu.com/watch/127059/king-solomons-mines

Is it better than Mogambo?
Wouldn't know. But now I'm ready to drop my rating to 5/10.

The Ice Harvest (2005) - 6/10
A popcorn crime comedy with some good actors.

Dirty Harry (blue ray) 5.5/10
Best shot of the series, but very aged. Seing the BR rather than the regular pan&scan version they show on TV made me realise that the cinematography is much better than what i thought.

I liked Dirty Harry a lot although it's dated and the message is somewhat questionable. Haven't bothered with the sequels.

Still, a 5.5 seems too low. You bastard.

Up in the Air - 6-7/10 - It coasts along as a pleasant, mind-numbing mediocrity until the last half-hour, when it nicely eschews a conventional ending, being unhappy without going for maudlin sentimentality. Nicely done. The rest of the film is pretty forgettable, with a few funny moments and likeable characters, not boring but not particularly engrossing either. Clooney is good, Anna Kendrick is cute, Sam Elliot's mustache has a fun cameo. It's pleasant enough, but is it really Best Picture-worthy?

I think I gave it a 7 and I'm sure it would lower on repeated viewings. But, really, what's the point of watching it again? Interesting thing is, the whole "Cancer" "Can, sir?" is a subplot in the novel where it's revealed that Ryan is a unreliable narrator. Probably would have made for a more interesting film too.

The whole love story thing with the twist you can see coming from 30,000 feet away annoyed me.

The Furies (1950) not bad about a 6.5-7/10 more a noir-ish family drama than a Western anything else.

Well, I'm not really a rightwing person, but I have to admit the questionable message is one of the strengthes of the movie. Especially the fact they wanted to convey the message at a point where every single guy in the movie industry was pushing for very leftwing messages.

Sherlock Holmes: 6.5/10
That was a fun one to watch. Too bad they didn't try too hard to make convincing baddies, that would have raise the movie to a different league. I especially liked the way they play with chronology.

The Sandlot - 7/10 - I hadn't seen this since I was a kid, when I watched it every other week (or so it seemed). It instills the same feeling of nostalgia and affection that Stand By Me seems to for a lot of people - not that I can relate 100% to the characters and events (though our neighborhood did play a lot of pick-up baseball games back in the day), but that it does a near-perfect job of representing childhood. Lots of silly, innocent fun, and I was pleasantly surprised that I still enjoy it.
