I like the first story, not the second.

Daredevil (2003) - 1.5 - 2 / 10

Watched 10 minutes somewhere in the movie. It was more than enough.

Oliver Twist - 8/10 - 2nd viewing. What makes this better than Great Expectations, more than anything, is the pace. GE had the narrative flow of Bigfoot's shower drain, trying to cram too much into too little time. In this film, Lean and Co. keep the exposition to a bare minimum, breezing through scenes of plot/character development as quickly as possible, leading to a pleasantly crisp pace. Great cinematography and art direction; the trio of bad guys are brilliant. The only thing it misses is the extensive location work of GE, but that's a forgivable flaw.

It still amazes me that there are adult people that write, direct and produce movies like this. I bet if you'd select 10 random DD fanboys-nerds they'd make it worth at least a fiver.

The Driver (1978) - Good action movie. O'Neal is catatonic as usual but the character helps him a little. Dern is hamming it too much. But the pacing is good. 7\10

As usual, we're in close agreement here.

Freetime Machos (2009) - 9/10
A comical documentary about the most northern and third lousiest rugby team in the world. Gives a great perspective on men and manly culture.

In compensation, though, we get some amazing set designs.

Good analysis: I never realized exactly why I preferred OT to GE, but I think you've put your finger on it. And "the narrative flow of Bigfoot's shower drain" had me LOLing.  Afro

TCM had a Peter O'Toole night last evening, so I caught Lawrence of Arabia and The Ruling Class.

The Assassination of Richard Nixon - 8/10 - It's like Taxi Driver, with a protagonist (Samuel Byck, the would-be assassin of Richard Nixon) who makes Travis Bickle look positively well-adjusted. Penn is brilliant here, avoiding the temptation to make his character likeable or sympathy, with a nice supporting cast (Naomi Watts, Don Cheadle, Jack Thompson). Not very directorially interesting, albeit with some nice editing and montage. Very good.

Paha perhe (2010) "Bad Family" - 7/10
A sister and brother have grown separately for 15+ years. Their mother dies and the girl moves in to live with her brother and father. The brother and sister seem to get along well, maybe even too well: their father begins to suspect that they have a sexual relationship. Good idea but the result is nothing mind blowing, though reasonably good anyway.

Closer (2004) - 8/10

The Ghost Writer (2010) - 8/10

very mature "thriller". Nice plot (would have been much more adult without that "CIA rules the UK" bullshit), cool slow pacing, charming and realistic atmosphere (didn't say the movie is realistic), good acting, very efficient and discret cinematography... Add to this a noir atmosphere and you get a great ad for the job of writer.

I might check this out; Timothy Hutton's in it.

The Wind That Shakes the Barley - 7-8/10 - Drags a bit in spots, but mostly really good. I felt more time could have been spent on post-independence Ireland but I won't complain too much.

But better than Ryan's Daughter, what?
