Les dames du Bois de Boulogne (1945) - 7/10
It has a similar quality as The Rules of the Game: There's nothing I don't like that I could put my finger on and I kind of appreciate and respect it but I can't really say I enjoyed it.

The ending is amazing.

Unlike The Rules of the Game, where the ending is annoyingly pat.

Blow-Up - 6/10 - Great mise-en-scene, nice direction and clever editing, but the story is boring, the pace painfully slow and the whole thing seems rather pointless. Plus the mimes.

Uno sceriffo extraterrestre - poco extra e molto terrestre (1979) - 6.75 out of 10

Bud Spencer solo flick. Great for kids. I never quite understood why they ceased making movies like this.

That's the only scene with real emotion.
Well, yeah. And dramatically effective as a result. The pressure, which has been building slowly throughout the film, is suddenly released. And you finally realize that there has been pressure (stemming from the unspoken assumption that we have been  watching a tragedy unfold), and also that this is not the story you thought it was (Orpheus) but another (the Harrowing of Hell). It's one of the best twist endings I know.

Seven Pounds - 5/10 - Loser guy, depressed and with nothing to live for, decides to solve everyone's problems. And he does so, romancing a drop-dead gorgeous, terminally ill girl in the process, before offing himself in a truly bizarre manner. Oh, and texting kills. Besides the cliched, maudlin story, the movie is 123 minutes long and, perhaps needless to say, ridiculously padded and drawn out, with a plethora of useless subplots. And the ending is not only insultingly convenient and sappy, but can be seen coming from a billion miles away. The only reason to see this is if you like the leads: Will Smith is pretty good, and Rosario Dawson is her usual incredibly lovely self. That's enough for me to give it a decent rating; others may disagree.

49th Parallel - 9/10 - Solidly constructed war time thriller. Lots of propagandistic speechifying about the righteousness of democracy over Nazism et al, but a perfect three-act structure, good acting and nice use of star cameos (I exempt Laurence Olivier's bizarre attempt at Quebecois) and lots of great cinematography by our buddy Freddie Young. David Lean is the editor.

Miesten vuoro (2010) "Steam of Life" - 9/10
Men in sauna talk openly about their life. I had some reservations; is this gonna be 81 minutes of men dwelling in self-pity? Well, I went to see it anyway after all the praising reviews and because one of the directors was present at the premier (the house was packed, he's from the town). And I was pleasantly surprised: the structure worked, they managed to build many short yet complete and touching stories. Who says men don't talk?
