The River's Edge (1957) I don't know whether this belonged to the noir topic. I'm not good at classify movies. Anyway I didn't put it there because 1) It is not boring 2) It has a happy ending. I give it 8\10 because it entertained me from beginning to end, the story was treated with original twists (expecially the great finale) and the 3 actors were brilliant.

Kick Ass (2010) - 8/10. This probably isn't the most violent film ever made, it just seems like it is. It's very funny, and well plotted too, although things get pretty predictable by the end. I liked the way the basic premise of the film--that superheroes without powers would go lethal when confronting violent criminals--is relentlessly pursued to its logical conclusion. And the proof that the filmmakers knew what they were doing resides in the fact that Nicolas Cage was in the film and it didn't ruin things for me. In fact, I actually enjoyed him for a change. To say anymore would spoil things: this really is a film that is better seen without reading reviews in advance.

Why be ashamed? It's a very clever updating of Jane Austen's Emma. I'd rate it as high as "8.5".

Terminator 2: Judgment Day - 9-ish/10 - 3rd viewing. Cameron's magnum opus. A film which sets the bar for all modern action films. Funnily enough, it has most of the same flaws as Avatar: cartoonish pretensions to importance, overbearing "message" and thematic material, lame, one-dimensional characters, and mawkish sentimentality. I'm pretty sure I saw an extended version (150+ minutes), which runs a bit long in the tooth, though I can only guess at what material was added since I hadn't seen the film in awhile (I assume Michael Biehn's cornball cameo was one such scene?). But Cameron, fortunately, focuses mostly on the action and plot, and the movie benefits immensely from this. It's ridiculously fast-paced for such a long film, and the action scenes are brilliant, marvelously constructed and completely thrilling. And the special effects are still extraordinary all these years later. Arnie is great (by Arnie standards, anyway), with the perfect mixture of violence and self-effacing humor (without overdoing the latter as in T3/Kindergarten Cop/etc.); Hamilton is good, Furlong tolerable. Joe Morton really stands out: despite minimal screen time he comes the closest to being an actual character. Too bad about the additional sequels, though.

T2 is the best action movie ever. I think the added scenes include: Sarah's dream at the begining, the "smile scene", some more Sarah voice over here and there..... The movie is slower, weirder and looks cheaper at the begining too. It is although good for what it is: a version for fans of the movie who knew all the other scenes by heart.


THE PIANIST: 7.5/10
Better than I remembered. However it gets close to Schindler's masterpieceness only a couple time: most characters are either caricatures (the brother) or not characterized (the girl), which makes it difficult to really care about them. The camerawork is ok and amazingly uninventive. Some "wow I'm gonna do a great cinama moment" scenes work ok but without any sensibility.
However, the piano sequences are amazing, some images stuck in your mind, the battle sequences witnessed from windows ARE great cinema moments, and the almost closing scene in the radio studio is incredibly moving. Actors do what they have to do with nothing, and Brody ranges from touching to so so, good performance in average. The soundtrack rules.

Hamlet (1948) - 9/10
Yes, I'm an illiterate idiot and have not either read the play or seen any adaptation of it until now (excluding Kaurismäki's Hamlet Goes Business). But I recognize a great movie when I see it.

Hamlet's not one of my favorite Shakespeares. Othello is far better IMO.

Irrelevant. A good production of Hamlet can beat a bad or mediocre production of Othello, and vice versa.

But the Olivier version of the play is not, to my mind, a good production. The play is severely cut (as it had to be), but in such a way as to prejudice the matter in favor of Olivier's fundamental misunderstanding of the piece. When he begins the film with a voice-over that tells us the play is about a man "who could not make up his mind," the game is over.

Million Dollar Baby - 7.5 /10
Good first part, melo second one (not as long as I remembered, which is good). Great acting from everyone, and probably the best cinematography in a Clint Eastwood movie (only Mystic River egals it). Tom Stern as a DP probably upgrades Clint's films a lot. Good music, one of the best writen by Clint too. The movie is touching, and they provided nice efforts in production value (often lacking in Eastwood's intimist movies). Great atmosphere at least during the first hour. The biggest flaw being that everything is too much. Good guys are too good, bad ones are too bad, weak ones are too weak....... Anyway,to sum it up: a good Clint.
