The glance that makes holes in the silver screen

Planet Terror (2007) - 8/10
The funniest zombie flick since Braindead (1992)...or then not. Just remembered Shaun of the Dead (2004)... But anyway, it's a lot of fun. The only thing that Death Proof did better were the scratches.

It's also the greatest John Carpenter flick not made by John Carpenter. Hence this peeve: as part of Grindhouse, on its theatrical run, PT was projected in a (correct) 2.35:1  AR; on home video, we get the film in 1.66: 1. This is a crock!

Painija (1985) "The Wrestler" >:D - 8.5/10
"Ageing wrestler and circus strongman is put in an institution located somewhere in a world of its own, next to an abandoned railway station with pigs running loose on the tracks in almost constant rain. The institution is filled with the most diverse characters, all trying to go on with their own familiar ways instead of giving way to apathy or to mockery by others -- a retired cellist, war veterans, and an artistic old lady with whom the Wrestler slowly becomes romantically attached. After showing her all the strongman feats he's still capable of, the Wrestler sets out with her on a dramatic escape, pulling a railway car behind him with his teeth." (IMDb) Probably the best movie I've seen from Matti Ijäs. Lots of humor, surreal images but a very dark undertone.

Shane - 8-9/10 - 2nd viewing. I liked it a lot more the second time around than the first. Jean Arthur and the annoying kid prevent this from getting top marks.

Death Rides a Horse (Da uomo a uomo) (1967) 9/10 and that for John Philip Law's wooden-esque acting otherwise top notch.  O0

Ugh, yeah Law was awful. Good flick though.

Funny Games (1997) - 7/10
Good as a horror film but the "oh, look I know I'm in a movie" deal is pretentious and pointless.

That squares with my take.

Z - 9/10 - Excellent thriller. It gets everything right - the direction, music, the feeling of paranoia and suspicion - and frankly makes American conspiracy thrillers of the same time period seem ludicrous. I especially liked how it set up a happy ending only to immediately subvert it. My only real complaint was the poor use of Irene Papas. The opening scene had some use of extreme close-ups that reminded me of DYS - wonder if Z was an influence?

Angel-A (2005) sort of Luc Besson's film take on films such as "Here Comes Mr. Jordan", "Heaven Can Wait", "It's A Wonderful Life", fun to watch 8/10

Really? I think you're the only guy on earth who likes it. (I didn't see it)

The Children's Hour (1961) - 8.5/10
Audrey Hepburn and Shirley MacLaine go gay, mmm ^-^ OK, now seriously... It's pretty much talk, talk, talk but the acting is great for 95% of the time and the text works it's not a big problem.

Yeah, that's a great movie. It gets extra points for the really hateful kid and not copping out with a happy ending.
