The glance that makes holes in the silver screen

The General - 8/10 - Liked this one a lot.
I watched it like five years ago for the first time and didn't think much of it. Then, a couple of weeks ago, I saw it with live music and an audience of 800: a wonderful experience! I don't think the war scenes towards the end work very well, though.

That sounds like a great way to see any movie.  Afro

The battle scenes were adequate, nothing great but didn't hurt the movie either. The two big chase scenes are the main attraction anyway.

Sergeant Rutledge - 7/10 - 3rd viewing. I think this film could have been a lot better had Ford excised the clumsy and obnoxious trial structure. Personally, allowing Rutledge and Co. to act heroically fighting Indians ought to be enough to ennoble them, why this preachy nonsense telling us what to think? I guess we have to consider the film as a product of its time, though. For the most part it's really good: the flashbacks are an excellent Western adventure with a twist. Woody Strode is a bit stiff but mostly good, and nails his big scenes. Jeffrey Hunter is surprisingly good although I could take or leave Constance Towers.

She Wore a Yellow Ribbon - 7-8/10 - 2nd viewing. Monument Valley has never looked more beautiful, and the episodic story gives us plenty of time to admire the scenery. For that alone it gets a lot of points. John Wayne is at his best and the movie does a good job showing the day-to-day life of cavalry troopers. The final raid on the Indian camp is very well-done, too. Downsides are the lame love triangle and Victor McLaglen at his most oafish and annoying.

The stupid  brawl scene is insufferable.

Agreed. That scene alone takes the film down a notch or two.

I had that same thought while watching it on cable years ago.

Il ferroviere (1955) As far as melodramas go this is perfect, 9 or 10\10. I don't like melodramas, though.

Salvatore Giuliano (1962) This made my personal all time italian top ten list ever since I saw it on the small screen. Rosi performed the miracle of making a different yet almost as great movie two years later with Le mani sulla cittą: the first one featured Frank Wolff, the other Rod Steiger, sounds a familiar procedure, doesn't it?
