The glance that makes holes in the silver screen

« #8415 : September 21, 2010, 07:59:58 AM »

I think the new version has a running time around 147 minutes. I would really recommend watching the 120 minute version first. You can always watched the extended version after that if you need certain plot points made clearer or what have you.

For the record, there are a few Silents I can appreciate: The General, The Passion of Joan of Arc, and Duvivier's Au bonheur des dames are all films I've enjoyed and would like to see again.
Yeah I think I'll watch the 120 min version in near future. I really need to see The Passion of Joan of Arc too.

Merry-Go-Round (1923) - 5.5/10
(As if this was any better choice to be watched when you have hang over than Metropolis...) 110 minutes is too long a running time for this story and the first reel could be tossed away. Some overacting but some amazing performances too. There's one giant plot hole and some actions make little sense. It's really an uneven film but it has some wonderful, almost operatic scenes.

Passion of Joan of Arc is awesome, that's all I can add to this discussion.

Submarino (2010) - 9/10
Directed by Thomas Vinterberg who is apparently a co-founder of the Dogme 95 movement. I have not seen a Dogme film in my life (and have no great desire to) but this is great filmmaking if you ask me. Nothing is "explained" but everything you need to know is there on the screen. Every synopsis I could find for the movie make it sound like shit and I don't feel like typing one so here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXQsSStHI5c

BTW, am I the only one who thinks that the new web design on IMDb sucks?

The Hard Way (1991) - 7/10

Very entertaining schlock.

Transporter 2 (2005) - 6/10

This is again just a bunch of nonsense - as much of the movies Jason Statham stars in are - but unlike those Crank flicks I can understand if someone likes it.

Interesting chicks.

Romper Stomper (1992) - 6.5/10

Seems proud of its ugliness.

Stander (2003) - around a 6/10

I must say I expected more from this one. The start's interesting, but apart from the action that's about it for the rest of the movie. The story/plot is executed in a rather monotonous way (don't know how it all went in real life), the (dry) characters don't quite unveil answers to questions that arise around their enterprise, the drama's unfocused, and the ending's far from satisfactory. Thomas Jane's okay.

I just picked up a 12 month subscription to the local cinema multiplex(i've only seen LOTR and QUANTUM OF SOLACE in the last decade).RESIDENT EVIL 3D is predictably a dreadful movie despite the impressive 3d effects -my first experience(4/10) though i think that DEVIL(6/10) is semi decent.I haven't been keeping up with what's been going on recently but i'm really hoping to see something really classy fairly soon.

Swing Time (1936) Werner Herzog appeared to me on the internet and told me I had to watch this film. And he was right!

Hombre - 8/10 - 2nd viewing. Liked it a bit less this time.

Jennifer's Body - 4/10 - I alternated between being annoyed as hell - there's nothing more obnoxious than Megan Fox spouting Diablo Cody dialogue - and profoundly indifferent, the latter response presumably what I'm not supposed to get out of a campy, gore-soaked horror flick. I'll definitely concede Amanda Seyfried is cute, at least early on, but I don't get Megan Fox's appeal; in theory she'd be my physical type but in practice she's too trashy to like. Anyway, screw it.

Superman Returns (2006) - 2.5/10

Good thing I caught only the last 50 minutes or so. O0
