Conte d'hiver (1992) "A Winter's Tale/A Tale of Winter" - 9/10
Is that a bit high? Well, it deserves at least 8.5/10...
A little high, I think. It is, however, the best of Rohmer's Four Seasons films.

The Onion Field (1979)  Too slow-paced for my taste. Especially after the apprehension of the murderers, the personal vicissitudes of the surviving policeman and the judiciary ones of the culprits tend to be repetitive and\or add little to what we already know. I think the book has an edge on the movie, though the movie saved me from reading it. 6\10

Interesting faces among the cast.

Appaloosa - 6/10 - Hmm. It has all the elements of a great Western but somehow doesn't work. One can easily imagine Anthony Mann or Budd Boetticher making this film, but director Ed Harris is competent at best. The biggest problem is the story, which jumps all over the place and has no real drive or focus - stuff just happens. While there are a few strong set-pieces (Viggo's encounter with the Apaches, the showdown at the jail) it doesn't quite come together. The movie looks nice but is directorally undistinguished, if that makes sense. The script is pretty blah dialogue-wise, the music's bland (with an odd sax-line that sounds cribbed from a noir) and the characters remain resolutely one-note. The cast is a high point: Ed Harris and Viggo Mortensen are great Western characters, Renee Zellwegger is okay though her romance with Harris seems too much a plot device, and there are nice character roles for Lance Henriksen, Tom Bower and Timothy Spall (channelling Gene Lockhart). Jeremy Irons is well-cast but one-dimensional. Despite this and some nice scenes it's generally disappointing.

Biggest problem being the fact that what begins as a dull romance subplot progressively takes the place of the main plot (man vs man) but stays dull.

The River Wild (1994) - pushing for a 6/10

Mildly entertaining Hollywood schlock.

Great performances by all with the exception of Savage in his usual role of surviving victim.

They Live (1988) - 7/10

There's a striking resemblance between the movies of Clint Eastwood and John Carpenter (especially the ones from the 70s and 80s): all of them look like they were produced by Malpaso.

Though, unfortunately, this is where the resemblances end: Carpenter's movies were a zillion times better in terms of ideas.

That's why this is such a pity.

The Incident (1990) I bought the dvd today just because of Matthau and that's the main reason (apart, maybe, from the unusual theme, of german POW's in USA) to watch it. If you don't like the actor miss it. 6\10

Going Postal (2010) - 7/10

Haven't read the book yet but it's quite ok. Poirot makes a lovely Large Ham Big Bad and Vetinari is good despite being blonde.

The Social Network - 8/10 - I'll try and locate the appropriate thread before elaborating.
