Nick of Time (1995)
- 6/10

I thought this was a decent thriller when I first saw it in the 90s, but nowadays it seems pretty weak and mediocre.

Christopher Walken lifts it one grade up: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JbuhgR3w0Zc

One-Eyed Jacks - 7/10 - A mostly good Western with weird, frustrating pacing. It's long, character-based, talky, really slow in spots and could definitely have used some trimming; the love story in particular could have been lost or crimped with little loss to the overall film. Brando is a competent director, providing good shootouts and some nice scenery (the sea-side town is gorgeous) but not having a handle on the craft's finer elements like pacing, dramatic economy and attention to detail. You can definitely discern Peckinpah's influence on the film with the recycled Left-Handed Gun bits that would later find their way into PG&BTK, especially the whole jail scene. Brando's performance is good though he seems too old for his part; Malden is fine, if a bit hammy; good supporting turns by Ben Johnson and Slim Pickens. Katy Jurado is ill-used. I'll be generous with my rating.

Von Ryan's Express - 8/10 - A lot better than I expected. It's a good old-fashioned WWII commando flick, liberally stealing the best elements of other films (The Train, Bridge on the River Kwai, The Great Escape) and draining it of all seriousness: after the first half-hour or so it's non-stop action and it's hard not to get swept up in the fun. The ending is a real kicker though. Frank Sinatra is coasting but Trevor Howard is stellar as usual.

What about Raffaella Carrą?

Carra's good-looking to be sure, but she has, what, five minutes of screen time?

I'm not impressed with the bad dye job. But she looked great in VRE.
