Wagon Master - 9/10 - One of Ford's best, a beautiful, rich and involving piece of work. The first half of the film is just beautiful to watch, and then plot kicks in. Lots of Sons of the Pioneers singing that fits the action, and the comedy is almost non-existent. A real gem.

Jesse Stone: Night Passage (2006) Robert B. Parker's novels are not my cup of tea, though i only read one of his Spencer's novels. He might have made some progress in the last thirty years but this movie based on the hero of another series confirm that he's more interested in characters and dialogues than action. I didn't like Selleck in the '80, he looked like a kind of inexpressive gay hunk: age though made him better. This movie is good, though not exceptional and it's well directed. I give it 7\10 and will try to find the other dvd's of the Jesse Stone's series.

They Died With Their Boots On - 8/10 - Okay, it's pretty much the textbook example of Hollywood historical inaccuracy. And in this case, an area I consider my realm of expertise (the US Civil War). Still, why complain when it's so well-done and damned entertaining? It's no worse, really, than Flynn's other historical escapades and it's lots of fun with great action scenes and a top-notch cast.

Nico - Above the Law (1988) Seagall's debut. Not his best movie, but with good action. Usual preachiness, but still keot within bounds. Good action scenes, especially the "on the car" chase. 7\10

Leaves of Grass (2009)
- 6.5/10

Another pointless movie that is entertaining enough the first time around.

If the point of the film was to entertain, then the film is not pointless if that aim was achieved. I apparently enjoyed the movie more than you did. It is kind of a slapdash effort--Coen-esque moments are scattered throughout something resembling a Cheech-and-Chong flick, and then the ending is straight from Wes Anderson. So it doesn't cohere particularly well. But some of the characters are fun: Richard Dreyfus makes a great crime lord, and the Jewish dentist and his meshugena wife--always kvetching! Laughed my tuchus off.

That's what you get, Drink, for not appreciating the genius of When You Read This Letter.

L'instinct de mort: Mesrine Part 1 (2008) - Another gangster bio pic! Can't have enough of those, I guess. This is a little hard to evaluate, as I need to see Part 2 (not yet available on North American Blu) to get the whole picture. But the film has a certain style--the director likes to use split screen a lot, in inventive ways. The cast is okay (with some incredibly good looking female supporting players), and the vintage clothes, cars, and desaturated colors are fun. Most interesting to me was the peek at life in a Canadian maximum security prison circa 1969. Who knew the Canuck's could be such hard asses? Just nostalgia now, apparently.

Part I is better than part II. The most interesting point about this movie is the fact it doesn't  look like a French movie of the 2000's. Which alone is great.

A History of Violence - 6/10 - 2nd viewing. Had more of a problem the second time around with the problems I had the first time around, hence a lower rating.

I just watched the first part (until Harris' death) yesterday evening after True Grit.
