The Tailor of Panama - 9/10 - Basically a straight, and better, version of Our Man in Havana. Geoffrey Rush is amazing and casting Pierce Brosnan as a sleazy anti-007 is brilliant. The ending is a bit of a cop-out but everything is marvelous.

Kick-Ass - 8/10 - Much to my shock, I really, really liked this film. Lacking the pompous pretension of Watchmen, it effectively sends up the superhero genre while being enjoyable on its own merits. Good acting, witty script, funny characters and clever plotting make this a fun ride. One problem: Hit Girl and Big Daddy rubbed me the wrong way, though not for any "moral" reasons: I just found them uninteresting and pointless. Nice use of the FAFDM theme towards the end.

They were the comic book types in the non-comic-book comic book movie. That is, the Kick-Ass character was the guy who brought a bit of reality into the mix, but HG and BD provided the genre markers the fan boys were looking for. So, the film upended conventions but also re-introduced and re-validated those conventions, a necessary move at this late stage.

La belle personne (2008) - 8/10. Transferring The Princess of Cleves to the 21st Century works, although Madame de La Fayette's novel is considerably changed in the process. Students are not aristocrats (although they may live like them) and a school is not a court, but amour and amour fou are universal themes (or so they tell me). Of course the ending, straightforward as it is in the original, is here made, necessarily, enigmatic, but that keeps things interesting. There are a few things not to like: the school apparently accepts only models and actors, there's not a normal looking kid in the bunch.  On the up side: Lea Seydoux, playing the title character, is so gorgeous, she shines even among all the competition. The wonderful soundtrack is made up of equal parts Bach and Nick Drake.

So you say.

If you want to keep the comic book movie genre fresh, that was probably the best way to do it.

Adding conventional genre elements keeps it fresh?

No, the Kick-Ass stuff is what makes it fresh, but the contrast helps the genre elements appear in a kind of heightened relief. Anyway, HG and BD made me laugh a lot.  It will be interesting to see how things work in Super (2010), which sounds like Kick-Ass without HG and BD (or at least without BD).

Easy A - 6/10 - This film got great reviews but I don't see what the big deal is. Just another goofy, oh-so-clever teen comedy with a few funny gags ("The Bible's in the best-seller section, next to Twilight"). It gets some points for an interesting cast: where else are you going to see Amanda Bynes and Malcolm McDowell in the same film?

Solder Blue - 2/10 - Billy Jack meets Little Big Man, but unfortunately much more Billy Jack. Aside from some nice photography, it fails on every conceivable level: aimless "plot," obnoxious characters, terrible acting, awful dialogue, message applied with a sledgehammer, intolerable music. The much-touted massacre scene is too over-the-top to take seriously. One positive: Buffy St. Marie is better than Coven.

The White Squadron (1936) The desert adventures of indigenous troops led by italians against raiders. Boring in spite of some good shots. The love story is stuck to the main plot line and it mkes the mvie suck even more. 3\10

Il treno crociato (1943)  Heavy melodrama on the vicissitudes of a trainful of wounded during the war. Among them lieutenant Brazzi who has a pathetic familiar history on which most of the plotline is based. 1\10

Fari nella nebbia (1942) It is commonly accepted by cinema historians to consider Ossessione as a forerunner of neorealism. Well, this must have been the forerunner of Ossessione. It reminds one of french movies of the '30's and it has a strong scene when Ferida rises from bed after sex  where lies adulterer Giachetti. You didn't see scenes like this in movies of the age except the french ones. Anyway the story is tolerable, though not particularly original. 7\10

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides - 7/10 - Still a bit bloated (I could have done without the mermaid romance plot) but a definite improvement on the last two installments. Depp plays Jack Sparrow with little variation, but Geoffrey Rush is hammy good fun, Penelope Cruz is sexy and Ian McShane makes a great Blackbeard. Judi Dench has a funny cameo.
