Just saw Gun Fight (1961) on Encore Westerns. 6.5/10

In black and white. with James Brown, Joan Staley, and Gregg Palmer.


Plot synopsis: Wayne Santley , a former cavalryman, tries to build a new life with Nora, a girl he meets on the stagecoach and rescues from the unwanted advances of gambler Cole Fender. Problems arise when Fender seeks revenge, and Santley finds out that his brother Brad leads a band of of outlaws and has a price on his head.


Better than the usual load of crap. In other words, don't put it in your Netflix queue, but if it happens to be playing on one of the classic movie channels and you are bored,  it's not a bad way to pass 67 minutes

The Law vs. Billy the Kid (1954) 5.9/10

Billy the Kid was a good guy; trouble kept running into him. At least that's what you'd believe if you watched this movie. Another movie that's pretty useless, but not the worst way to pass 72 minutes when you have to

Out of the Past (1947) 10/10

A fantastic noir, with Robert Mitchum, Jane Greer, and an early supporting performance by Kirk Douglas.

Royal Flash - 7/10 - 3rd viewing. I think this film is growing on me, but this viewing was mainly to check out the audio commentary. Malcolm McDowell contributes a very lively, informative account of the film's background and production, and has lots of fun stories about Alan Bates and Oliver Reed.

[Big Boss 1971]

IMO , Death Wish was great.....5/6 from me. Much better than the sequels imo.

Mummy 3 , Emperors Tomb 3/6.....meh , first 2 were more entertaining.

GI Joe RoC 4/6.......OTT as expected , makes for a good time.

El Cid (animated) 4/6......all right I guess but much prefer '61 version.

Don't mess with Zohan 4/6......OTT CGI humor but better than I thought.

007 TSWLM 5/6......a 70s Goldfinger , has some humor but not extremely OTT.

007 MR 4/6......yeah , I'm being perhaps a bit too generous but when you oversee the OTT shenanigans it's actually passable. I preferred Drax over Stromberg. The movie was already larger than life when the space battle began so I thought it was a fitting climax although many fans rightfully objects to it.

Hotel Paradiso 3/6 (don't remember the title fully.....it's a farce starring Guiness and Lolobrigida)

Will Penny - 8/10 - A solid Western with a wonderfully down-to-earth atmosphere and feeling; you can believe these are real people in the real Old West. It pulls off the episodic, revisionist cowboy story much better than The Culpepper Cattle Co. since you actually care about what's going on. The action scenes are creative, the romance (or non-romance) is handled surprisingly well and the characterizations are generally sharp. This might be Charlton Heston's best performance (it's definitely on the list), Joan Hackett is pleasant, Donald Pleasance is dependably squirrely and there's a riot of familiar Western faces in bit parts. The ending is a bit convenient but it's very satisfying to see Pleasance and Co. get their deserts.

Death Wish 2 - 5/10 - 2nd viewing. If the first film was sadistic, this movie is just cruel: it really rubs your nose in its violence with two graphic rape scenes and gruesome gore. Eventually it turns into a decent shoot-'em-up even if its message remains obnoxious.

Les valseuses / The Testicles [English title: Going Places] (1974) - 9/10. Two happy-go-lucky small-time crooks (Gérard Depardieu, Patrick Dewaere) rob and/or molest all whose paths they cross. In spite of the shocking and cruel things they do--and even 21st century viewers will find their acts shocking and cruel--the pair endear themselves to their audience (or, at least, they did to THIS audience). They also endear themselves to a placid hairdresser's assistant (Miou-Miou) whom they meet several times and treat like dirt on each occasion. The girl so likes their abuse that she ends up joining the men on their adventures. This film is so un-PC it isn't funny--no, wait, it IS funny, that's the whole point. The film is also highly episodic: Jeanne Moreau appears in one vignette, a young Isabelle Huppert in another. Bertrand Blier, the director, has furnished the movie with a brilliant conceit: the two men are never held to account for their actions. Just the opposite, in fact. In the universe in which they inhabit, they actually seem to be rewarded for their crimes. This relentless amorality is the source of much of the film's humor. SPOILER There's a wonderful non-payoff payoff at the film's end. In an early sequence, the men steal a Citroen from a man they hate. They doctor the front axle to break while the car is in use, then allow the owner to reclaim his car. Later they are frustrated to learn that the unwitting owner sold the vehicle before he could have his "accident." In the movie's final episode the men steal another Citroen, a dead ringer for the earlier car and--we suspect--actually the one with the doctored axle. As the men and Miou-Miou go careening down a dangerous mountain highway, it seems that they will suddenly get their long-delayed comuppance. It doesn't happen.END SPOILER.

Duck, You Sucker (1971) - 10/10. First Theatrical Screening. Saw this with an audience who mostly hadn't seen it before; they seemed to like it very much. They were artsy-fartsy types who found it surprising that they could enjoy a film with so many explosions. For my part, I enjoyed seeing the excellent print and the thick grain that Technoscope provides. Is it my imagination, or does this movie have more ultra close-ups than any other Leone film? Jonathan Demme was on hand and afterwards he would not shut up about the score. He kept claiming that Morricone had written a love theme for Miranda and Mallory. Okay, I guess that leaves poor Nolan alone on the outside looking in. I would have liked to pipe up with the My Three Seans Theory, but other people were hogging the mike. I did, however, raise the issue of how it could be that Juan knew it was Mallory on the other side of the wall when Mallory whistled the tune that Juan had never heard before. Demme claimed that that was further proof of the romance between Juan and John (whom he referred to as "Sean"). Thankfully, the discussion broke up soon after that.

Nice. I really wish I can get to see all of Leone's films on the big screen one day. But I did watch a helluva football game
