I don't want to spoil the plot for anyone planning to see this fresh (as I was able to do). As I said, I haven't read the books or seen the earlier films, so I have nothing to compare it with. If you like what Fincher has been doing lately, you'll probably go for this, although it has some unsavory aspects: anal rape, dismemberment (human and feline). It's kind of like a Swedish Zodiac, but with more of a standard payoff. The characters are memorable, as are the performances: great work from Christopher Plummer, Stellan Skarsgard, and--who knew he was still alive?--Steven Berkoff. Of course, Rooney Mara is great as the title character. Craig is still short.

Good to hear though. Right now I'm debating whether to see this or Tintin on Friday.

RE: The Departed:

It's not simply like I just thought I'd figured it out but I was wrong. That's happened before  Smiley
It's that I thought it was so OBVIOUS that between Damon and Leo, Damon HAS to be the good guy, that I thought it was fact, and that that is what we were supposed to believe. I mean, Damon as a bad guy vs. Leo as a good guy? Really? That's why the whole movie was kinda confusing for me when it turned out I was wrong.

But I'll give it another shot eventually

Why not see both? I would.

La vérité / The Truth (1960) - 8/10. Brigitte Bardot is on trial for murdering Sami Frey, and as testimony is given and the court deliberates (and as competing counsels Charles Vanel and Paul Meurisse try to out-ham each other), we see in a series of flashbacks how BB got into her predicament. The 130 minute film is a little long--dropping 20 minutes would have done it a lot of good--but it showcases BB's considerable talent as an actress, for which, no doubt, director Henri-George Clouzot should receive considerable credit.

Tintin (2011) 7/10. I saw this in IMAX 3D and I was the only one in the theater (okay, it was an 11:00am showing, but still). I'm unfamiliar with the comic; this particular movie seemed very like an animated Indy Jones adventure. The animation isn't bad (although the 3D is perfunctory), yet I couldn't help wondering--several times, in fact--what it would have looked like if Pixar had done it. The plot moves along at a nice clip and never hangs fire; also, there were a number of visual gags I enjoyed. John Williams applies his usual sonic wallpaper. Overall, the film is entertaining, but not really worth a second watch.

Animated Indiana Jones squares with other reviews I'm hearing. Right now I'm leaning towards the Dragon Tattoo if I can work around the earlier showtime.

Tintin (2011) 7/10.

What really bothers me with this movie is this: had they worked 10 more minutes on the script (a couple transitions and "I love Venice" type quotes), 15min on the editing (adding 3 seconds to the wide shots closing big sequences), and told John Williams "ok cool score, now please compose a proper theme for the movie", they would have made one of the very few masterpieces of adventure movies.

Pretty good summary. I saw it hung over and kept dozing off throughout the picture  Sad

Saw IDES OF MARCH yesterday, very good indeed.
Takes its time, almost 40 minutes pass by until we know what will make the protagonists run for the next hour. But Clooney knows how to film scenes and doesn't fall into the old Hollywood 'story story story' trap. He slowly unfolds the characters and that makes us care for what follows.
Good man.

Song of the Thin Man (1949) caught the last half of this today noteworthy because it featured three Noir Femme Fatales, Jane Meadows, Gloria Grahame, and Marie Windsor in the cast

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (2011) - 7-8/10 - I can second most of Jenkins' comments. It took awhile to set the stage and the last 20 minutes dragged on too long but in between is a cracking good thriller. The story's nihilism fits Fincher's thematic and stylistic preoccupations perfectly, and like his best films it works better as a character study than a narrative. Rooney Mara is just about perfect: Lisabeth could easily have been ridiculous but Mara strikes the perfect balance of nasty and vulnerable, likeable and creepy. Daniel Craig hasn't been better in a non-Bond role since Casino Royale (damning with faint praise I guess) and the supporting cast is perfect. Some minor quibbles with the story structure and making a few things too obvious but worth watching. Not sure of a rating yet.

It's very enjoyable and you really won'tbe able to watch such great camerawork until Scorsese or Fincher tries animation. The flash back sequences are mind blowing. So I'd advise any film goer to watch this as soon as possible. But Like I said, this could easily have been a 9/10 flick (never 10/10, it's too obviously targeted at children and the character of Tintin will never allow you to do something perfect) and I don't understand why they didn't makea few obvious adjustments in post. But I rate it somewhere between 6 and 7 out of 10. Probably 7 but I'm pissed of right now.
