What if you don't give 2 fucks about the silent film era? An homage to manure is just more manure.
Silent movies to sound is an interesting part of movie history to begin with, whether you like silent movies or not. At least I think so.

I've never had an interest in watching silent films. The only one I've ever seen is The Great Train Robbery

In film class we saw plenty of silent films.  Best was City Lights, Modern Times OK.  Birth of a Nation was more important than good.

Of course, I never liked Citizen Kane much (who heard Kane say Rosebud if he was alone?), again, more important (sets with ceilings, symbolism of the table) than good.  I couldn't stand 2001: A Space Idiocy.

As to last film I saw, my daughter and I watched Rango last night, lots of Leone references including close up of boots walking (beginning of GBU), hunchback who looked like Kinski, the close up of the hat then character raising his head to show his face, even a Man with No Name character with a poncho and gold statuettes and awards in his cart (he looked and sounded like Clint, but was voiced by Tim Oliphant).  Rango in a poncho.  Bad guy in control of the water was in wheelcahir like Morton, said businessmen would take over.  Creaky windmill shown in same framing as beginning of Once/West.

The Newsroom: Pilot Episode
Probably the best single episode of a TV show I've ever seen. Brilliant.

Just offhand, The Passion of Joan of Arc, The Crowd, The General and pretty much anything by Eisenstein should be seen as well. I do not have a great preference for silent movies but it's ignorant to dismiss them as manure and/or whatever Drink said.

That's good hearing. I was leery about another Aaron Sorkin TV show about a TV show but I'd be glad to be proven wrong.

There's a few silent films that I legitametly love and would place somewhere among my favorites of sound movies: Greed, La Roue, and City Lights. Those are the main three. Other absolutely great silent movies are Intolerance, The Kid, The Gold Rush, and Metropolis.

Greed is almost undoubtedly my favorite silent movie. I've never seen the 4 hour 'cut', mainly because its half-composed of set photos to fill in the missing story. The 2 1/2 hour or so version is incredible. I barely remember it but I need to see it again.

But yeah, absolutely loved The Newsroom. I don't know if it's quite in the taste of most users here, but definitely give it a shot.

Does anyone here keep up with Boardwalk Empire?

I caught the first season of Boardwalk Empire. It didn't really click with me though I like the cast a lot. I don't get HBO at my current digs so I missed last year's run.

I didn't say manure or anything derogatory. Or ignorant. Or dismissive.  All I said was that I've never had much of an interest in them. The statement was totally regarding ME and my preferences, and said nothing about the product itself

Boardwalk Empire and Dexter are must sees for me.

Sorry to see Jimmy go but after having sex with his mother, it was inevitable.  Good to see William Forsythe again - wonder how he'll do as Jake LaMotta in Raging Bull II.  Season 3 starts in Sep (?) and it's now 1923.  Can't wait.

Dexter keeps on surprising me but it's now season 7.  It can't go on forever.

How would you react if I said I didn't have any interest in watching black and white films?

... Oh wait.
