THE LOVED ONE
over-the-top ending That, in fact, is the single characteristic placing this film in the history books as one of the first real anti-war, anti-establishment, anti-bourgeois relics of popular culture just at the cusp of an entirely new epoch
the country was still on overdrive after the assassination of President Kennedy, numb and oblivious as to what was about to happen

Just saw AGE OF CONSENT. Were hairy legs and armpits an Australian girls fashion trend in 1969?

Lawless
(2012) 9/10. The film Public Enemies wished it could have been. And seeing Jessica Chastain's tits in 4K was a treat. Nick Cave's soundtrack is a real toe tapper: I rushed right home and ordered a copy from amazon.
Just saw the movie, and I have to respectfully disagree with just about everything dj said.
IMO:
It's no 9/10 (a 6.5/10 is more like it)
I didn't do much toe-tapping
I am not sure what the
Public Enemies
comparison is all about, one involves bank robbers during the 30's, the other involves redneck bootleggers during roughly the same time period, but aside from that very minor similarity, the two movies have nothing in common.
With all the talk about the all-star cast in
Lawless
, the only remarkable performance came from the (6th billed) Mia Wasikowska.
The film is certainly NOT a complete mediocrity; it has its merits. The production design was spectacular, the locations were absolutely wonderful, some of the shots were just terrific, and the film had its moments, (particularly toward the end). But there is way too much talk-talk-talk.

I just saw two documentaries TCM did on Bogie
"Bacall on Bogart"
, and
"Bogart: The Untold Story."
The first was narrated of course by Lauren Bacall, and the second by Bogie's son Stephen Bogart.
They are both good. Both intersperse discussions of Bogie's career with those about his personal life, but they are very different. Bacall of course was his wife, so in "BoB," she is talking from personal memory. But Stephen was only 8 when Bogie died and didn't know him very well or remember that much. Initially, he didn't want to be "Bogie's son," and didn't know much about his father's life. But eventually he decided to learn about his father's life, and much of "B:TUS" involves Stephen's personal journey to discover facts about his father's early life, as he looks up newspaper archive clippings about Bogie's early marriages (he was married to 3 women before Bacall), talks to his father's associates, so Stephen is learning this stuff for the first time as we are.
Both documentaries are certainly interesting, and intersperse the personal stories with those about Bogie's career. Plus there are many interviews with those involved with Bogies career, including Katherine Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Jon Huston, and others. ("BoB" is about 90 minutes; "B:TUS" is about 50 minutes).

- 7/10 - Beautifully shot with impeccable period detail. Shia Labeouf is excellent, Tom Hardy lots of fun, Jessica Chastain hot. The third act action scenes are suitably impressive, especially the chase/shootout in the still. I'd give it a higher rating if it didn't wallow in cartoon cliches, be it the cornball romance or Guy Pearce's laughable baddy.
