Black Swan is a tedious turd that reeks of art house pretension. Natalie Portman's the only reason to watch and even she can only do so much.

The Departed (2006) - 6/10

Enjoyable, at times.

Now rewatch it. And again. And again. It grows on you.

Natalie Portman's the only reason to watch and even she can only do so much.

The scene where she calls her mother from the restroom just after she got the part: she's marvelous.

Greatness shouldn't take 5 viewings to grow on you. Sure, some movies (and songs, and paintings, etc.) are appreciated more and more with each subsequent viewing, but if a work of art is not enjoyable after one or two viewings, no need to be like a kid tryng cigarettes or booze for the first time, trying to force yourself to like it

Greatness should take whatever it takes to grow on you. Who cares, as long as it's greatness?
Now, there is enough greatness in this world to avoid wasting time with less-accessible greatness... Your choice your loss Smiley

Maybe it's on your back, so you can't see it.

well even if I agreed with you theoretically, how would I know it's great before it has grown on me? Just cuz I blindly trust you that it will indeed grow on me?  Wink

Ironically, I did not much like The Departed when I saw it, but now it's near the top of my queue, I am about to give it a second chance. One main reason I didn't like it: I always assumed Leo was the bad guy and Matta Damon the good guy (isn't it natural that between the two of them, Leo would be the bad one and Damon the good one?) So I always just KNEW the movie was trying to trick us. Well, I turned out to be wrong: the movie was telling us the truth all along that Damon was bad and Leo good; so I had never bought into a fact that I was supposed to believe right away, so it made it all weird for me. I will definitely give it another shot, I definitely think that if I don't have that conflicted thought, this movie has potential.

But that's not the same thing as blindly re-watching a movie I didn't like just cuz you insist it will grow on me  Tongue

I don't understand.

Doesn't the movie start showing us Damon's character being Frank's pup?

It's a really lame trick if so.

yes, the movie shows Damon to be the bad guy and Leo to be the good guy right away.

However, it's also fairly clear all along that things are not necessarily what they seem, and that before the movie is over, some people will be shown to be on a different side than we thought they were at the start.

So, though it is pretty clear all along that Damon was the bad guy and Leo the good guy, I was SURE that some major twist was coming, showing that somehow Damon was really a police mole and Leo was really the gangster's mole. I mean  do you really figure Matt Damon for being badder than Leo?  Well, I guess it was a clever casting against type, and I was a bit too smart for myself  Embarrassed
