Am I missing something, or is this movie really as awful as it seems? Best decision of my day was turning it off halfway through.

Dave Jenkins, I've got a gut feeling you probably love it. In that case then we've got another Three Colors: Blue on hand. It was gorgeous-looking from what I saw, though.

Boxcar Bertha (1972) 2/10

Scorcese's second feature is the worst film of his that I have ever seen

The ending is brilliant. And there is some more good stuff in it.

Actually I watched Scorsese's real worst again last week. While mostly all Scorsese films get better in the re-watching process, Shutter Island doesn't. The beginning is good, and the ending too, but in the overlong middle part it drags in a painful way. Much too long for the little narrative substance it has. 5/10

Not one I was very interested in. But I haven't re-watched it since it was in the theatres. Memory would give it a 6, but it is really so long ago ...

Gun Crazy (1950) Finally watched it all the way through, excellent Noir.  The downward spiral of a mild mannered sharpshooter husband. Pressured by his beautiful Carney marksman wife to make like Bonnie and Clyde, shooting up the countryside till their final denouement. 9/10

I own the DVD, watched it once, almost quit about 10 times, never had the courage to watch it again. Above all, it looks like it's done by a bunch of amateurs with no budget. Then add the fact that the point of the story doesn't interest me (that's a matter of opinion :) ) and that it's very poorly shown. Things that are explicitly treated as metaphors in the Bible are very literal here (example: the heart scene).

Yes, I remember there were at least a few things I did not like either. That the treatment of the story seemed to me "cheap", or poorly conceived in parts, but overall I don't remember it as a complete failure.

Kundun was on the other hand a well made film, but for its themes I hadn't much interest either. I do not care for religious stuff either in film or life anymore.

It can be more interesting when the topic is universal enough to go beyond religion... See: Mean Streets
I have never watched Kundun, probably because of the last temptation. But if it is at least well crafted I should give it a shot...

Good movie with a great femme fatale, but IMO John Dall was terribly cast here. IMO this movie gets no more than a 7.5/10 solely because of him. A decent male lead and it would have scored well higher in my book. Dall ain't a bad actor (he was good in Rope, a pretty bad movie) but he wasn't right for this role

Army of Shadows - 7-8/10 - Jean-Pierre Melville's chronicle of the French Resistance is both fascinating and frustrating. Fascinating, because of Melville's excellent, moody mis-en-scene (has a blue-black pallet ever been used so-well), some stellar set pieces and the commendable avoidance of cliche. Frustrating, because of its episodic structure and relentlessly grim tone. True, fighting the Nazis can't have been fun, but there's so much gloominess it becomes a slog. Fortunately, Melville provides interesting enough characters to keep the audience engaged.
