A Streetcar Named Desire (1951) 10/10 (fourth viewing)

what can I say that hasn't already been said about one of the very greatest movies ever made, featuring one of the very greatest (maybe THE greatest?) performances in movie history, by Marlon Brando

La piscine / The Swimming Pool (1969) - 7/10. First Blu-ray viewing. Alain Delon and Romy Schneider are spending their vacation house-sitting in a beautiful villa above St. Tropez. Maurice Ronet shows up with an 18-year-old daughter in tow--Jane Birkin. Delon is immediately interested, and it turns out that Ronet and Schneider have enjoyed a previous relationship. Will new couples form and re-form? The film keeps you waiting to find out. Also, Ronet starts needling Delon--hey, didn't this already happen in Purple Noon? Is there an act of violence in the offing? The two men remain firmly on land, but there is that damned swimming pool . . . . With a very pleasant score from Michel Legrand, and a silly pop song with lyrics by the Bergmans. The blu-ray does the wonderful summertime photography proud.



That's what you get, Drink, for not appreciating the genius of When You Read This Letter.

Bonnie and Clyde (1967) 10/10 (second viewing)

The movie is much better when you forward through the extended scenes with Estelle Parsons shrieking like a hyena

A Perfect World (1993) 8/10

The final scene is strung out way too long, and changes the whole tone of the movie; it was pretty lighthearted drama all along, and suddenly becomes extremely melodramatic in that extended final scene.

But otherwise, this movie is a lot of fun. Both Costner and the kid were really good

The change of tone is a good idea I think. And you understand the first images of the film. It actually changes the meaning and the tone of what happens in between...

Senso - 7/10 - This movie works best in its opening hour, as a well-crafted period melodrama complemented by sumptuous imagery and decor. Aida Valli provides a suitably operatic performance and Farley Granger makes an agreeable cad. Visconti then tries inflating the story to Gone With the Wind proportions, without overmuch success. One, the characters are too shallow to earn such treatment. Two, the historical content seems almost incidental to the plot. For all the elaborate locations, sumptuous costumes and epic battles it's still a two-penny harlequin romance. At least it's beautiful to watch.

I WAKE UP SCREAMING (1941) 7/10
one of the earliest films noir, there is a very good commentary by Eddie Muller detailing how this is one of the earliest noirs, THE MALTESE FALCON was released a short time earlier but didn't have the noir visuals that this one does, also this one has an elaborate flashback structure
(three years before DOUBLE INDEMNITY).
