Lone Star (1996) dir. John Sayles Writer: John Sayles, with Stars: Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Peņa, Miriam Colon, Stephen Mendillo, Francis McDormand, Kris Kristofferson, Ron Canada, Joe Morton, Jeff Monahan, Matthew McConaughey.  A great ensemble cast and nice convoluted mystery story involving a 40-year-old skeleton found in the desert with a masonic ring and a sheriffs badge. A great soundtrack too 8.5-9/10.

Payback (1999) noir-ish remake of Point Blank, some nice sequences, some dumb sequences 6.5-7/10

Amazingly, it does have some rewatch value.

I don't view Payback as a remake. It is based on the same book, not on Boorman's film.

Which version did you watch?

I think it was the theatrical cut not the directors cut. It was on the IFC.

Don't know what IFC is, I have the German disc anyway.

It is not he usual DC thing, as both versions are often completely different. I think Kris Kristofferson (or was it James Coburn?) appears in only one of the 2 versions, and the ending is very different. The theatrical version is based on a re-shooting about a year later ,for which large parts were re-shot or newly shot.

Black Sea (2015) 4K - 6/10. The Treasure of the Sierra Madre at the bottom of the sea (the Black Sea  ;)). Jude Law, exhibiting a credible Scott's accent (to my ears, anyway), is skippering a POS submarine with a crew of half UK/half Russian out-of-work salts. The reason? The gold! On a shelf in the Black Sea lies a U-boat with a cargo of Nazi gold--at least, the gold could be there. So, the salvage operation is on, but the men have to get in and out without the Russian navy finding out about it. And only one other problem--the Brits and the Ruskies hate each other. The captain has to keep his leaky boat and his leaky crew together long enough to finish the mission. Great premise, and the film is, for the most part, fun, but it has a couple of problems. First, we don't get a lot of explanation about how a submarine (especially one of this class and vintage) runs. We don't know what it's capable of doing, so when problems arise it's difficult to fully fathom the issues (heh, did you see what I did there?) and hard to evaluate the proposed solutions. Sometimes this works OK; there's one occasion when the crew must improvise a sonar system, and it's exciting to realize (without having it explained) what they're up to. But at other times I was just confused. Of course, there's also the problem of crew members who make stupid choices just to make the plot more complicated. Finally, at the end, the last trial is explained pretty thoroughly, but as it's negotiated a detail is added that seems to fly in the face of what we've just been told. These kinds of things make the film a less-than-satisfying experience.

IFC is the Independent Film Channel, anyway I'm willing to give the other version a shot, so what did I watch the re-shot stuff?

Pork Chop Hill (1959) 1080p - 8/10. Gregory Peck, the oldest 1st Lt. in the Army, leads his boys up the hill for one last assault before the end of the Korean War (which is being negotiated even as the men charge). Cannon fodder is supplied by Harry Guardino, George Peppard, Rip Torn, Bob Steele, Woody Strode (as a wannabe malingerer, until the LT puts him straight), Norman Fell, Bobby Blake, Biff Elliot, Charles Aidman, Martin Landau, Gavin MacLeod, Bert Remsen, James Edwards, and, uncredited, Harry Dean Stanton and Clarence Williams III. (Actually, a few of these guys make it out alive). The film has lots and lots of action, and also the amusing device of a male Tokyo Rose (let's call him Shanghai Sam, shall we?) who keeps taunting our heroes through a very impressive loud speaker. He has a recording of "Taps" which he plays for the Americans just as they are about to attack prepared Chinese positions. Funny guy.
