"One banana, two banana, three banana, four...."

« #15435 : November 21, 2015, 09:44:53 AM »

La tÍte d'un homme (1933) - 6/10. A man in a bar, desperate for money, unthinkingly announces that he'd pay 100,000 Somethings to anyone who would bump off his rich aunt (he is her sole heir). A few minutes later, he receives an anonymous message: "Your offer has been accepted." This is a Georges Simenon novel, adapted by Duvivier, with Harry Baur playing Maigret.

Poil de carotte (1932) 7/10. "A family is a group of people who live under the same roof who can't stand each other." This is what little Carrot Top writes on his boarding school essay before going home for summer vacation. Once home he is bullied and neglected--Mom does the bullying, Dad the neglecting. It's not that his parents are bad, just unhappy, and Carrot Top must bear the brunt of their unhappiness. He puts up with it for awhile, then decides to end it all. Will Dad (played by Harry Baur) get a clue and act in time to save his son? Surprisingly, this is not a maudlin picture, but one full of wit and some good observations about family life. The editing on this is really, really well done: the pace is brisk, never slackens, and the frequent intercutting between the several character maintains interest. Duvivier does it again.

The Strange One (1957) 7.5/10

Quite a juicy tole and terrific performance by Ben Gazzara in his first movie.

The Devil's Disciple (1959) - 7/10. Not a tale of occult horror, but an adaptation of the G.B. Shaw play, set at the time of the American Revolutionary War, about a week before Saratoga. Burt Lancaster plays a minister, Kirk Douglas a ne'er-do-well; the two come together to face the British threat in the person of Lawrence Olivier (playing General "Gentlemanly Johnny" Burgoyne). Olivier is destined to fail, but, naturally, has all the best lines. Troop movements are suggested by some interesting animation. This is yet another one of those widescreen b&w films that Drink has never seen.

Has anyone here seen this movie? I post more about it  if I knew someone here had seen it and wanted to discuss it  ;)

Le Capital (Costa Gavras, 2012) 2/10
Don't show this to Drink, he would be so upset we would get a dozen 20 lines posts filled with personal anecdotes and rants against these damn socialists.

10%, season 1 6/10
The best French TV show since the early 80's! Some good ideas, some good actors, one good director (episode 1), mostly bad dialogues.

Bangkok Dangerous 3/10

I have good excuses for all of these!

1) Bangkok Dangerous and Le Capital were just playing in the background while I was working. I don't spoil real movies that way.
2) I watched 10% for work (it's the hot series right now in France, every new TV project needs to be "the 10% of something").
3) More importantly, I'm dedicated to watching stuff just to annoy you (I don't talk to Mr Tit)

ps: I'm not young anymore I found a white hair the other day  :'(

Well, everyone needs a hobby, but that's one of the strangest one I've heard. And then there's your long-term project to annoy Drink. I guess we all do what we're good at. Still, if I were you, I'd spend more time watching good movies.

I unfortunately don't have the time nor the gear (no TV these days, I'm watching all of these turds on iPad). Christmas season should give me a bit of both.

Don't worry, I never make it fully through a Costa Gavras film.

The only commie movies I can recall having watched in full are THE GRAPES OF WRATH and Michael Moore's CAPITALISM: A LOVE STORY (the latter only because a friend begged me to go and paid for my ticket; he had to watch it cuz he was reviewing it for a libertarian blog) ;)

Blind Chance (1981/87) - 7/10. A man runs to catch a train. Three destinies await him, each depending on whether he catches the train, misses the train and in frustration tussles with a railway official, or misses the train yet manages to master his emotions. In the end it doesn't matter what he does; he's a Pole under communism and the system is against him. Or maybe it's the director, Kieslowski, who is out to get him. Anyway, there's no way to win. Blind Chance is one of Kieslowski's best films, and due for a rewatch. Unfortunately I have only a VHS copy at the moment.

Very entertaining. 9/10
