Setsuko Hara Memorial Week

Tokyo Twilight (1957) - 7/10. Wow, this is a real downer (which I knew in advance, and was the reason I'd put off seeing it for many years). And it's long (140 min.) and it has too many scenes with women crying into their hands. And Hara is only a secondary character. On the plus side, though, Ozu leavens the melodrama with lots of well observed moments of quotidian reality: a medical clinic attendant in a cold office trying to keep warm while her charge in another room is dying; a woman on a train at Tokyo Station, hoping against hope for a send-off while a University cheering group noisily says goodbye to another traveler (not Keio; is it Waseda, or Hosei, or . . . ?) And then of course there's Chishű Ryű, stoic as ever.

Ferris Bueller's Day Off 7/10
It's funny how John Hughes' films aren't known in France. Even The Breakfast Club has no viewers here.

Haha dj, I told you the same thing about SEVEN SAMURAI, half the movie is people crying (men, not women - even worse) and your response was, hey, that's what they did in other cultures Cheesy

n_l,

Is this your first viewing of Ferris Bueller? That's a movie everyone here watches in high school. (Usually on their "day off") Wink

I'm not complaining about crying per se, I'm talking about the convention of women crying into their hands as a way to signal tears without having to actually produce them. It's a phony way to show crying.

Yes, first viewing. I saw Breakfast Club for the first time least than a year ago. I know they're famous in the USA. Nobody has heard of them here.
I've watched Home Alone 1 & 2 (Hughes worked on the script) every single year since they're available on VHS though Wink

Creed (2015) - 8.5/10
This film is great! Sylvester Stallone for Best Supporting Actor. Give it to him even if he's not actually the best this year. enough razzies.

Watched it too, yesterday evening. Generally I don't care that much for Lang's films, but this one was a well directed and unique film full of absurd situations with a slight surreal atmosphere in many scenes. Very noirish, well acted and thrilling. 9/10

I like lots of Lang's films more than this one: The Woman in the Window, Scarlet Street, Human Desire, even The Return of Frank James.
