I liked Auteuil's performances very much in the two films of the "Marseilles trilogy" that he made recently, Marius and Fanny. Yeah, whatever, it is a soap opera, but I thought Auteuli's performances were really good; that made me look for some more movies he acted in.

He was absolutely great in the old Manon Des Sources. Everybody thought he was gonna be a huge actor after that. He never achieved that level back, though he really has "something" that makes you happy when you see him on screen.

I saw him in the streets in Paris the other day. he was talking money and TV shows.

Chi-Raq - 6/10 - Spike Lee's latest, a hip-hop musical take on Lysistrata, set in modern Chicago. Interesting concept (most dialogue scenes play in blank verse), plenty of memorable scenes (an army of supervixens reacting simultaneously to a slap), but falls victim to hamfisted preaching (John Cusack as a literal preacher, spelling out the movie's message) and sophomoric humor (a horny General wearing Confederate briefs?). Enjoyed the performances, the music and some of the imagery but the concept wears thin at two hours.

The Last Days of Pompeii - 4/10
The Colossus of Rhodes - 6/10
A Fistful of Dollars - 7.5/10
For a Few Dollars More - 9/10
The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly - 10/10
Once Upon a Time in the West - 10/10
Duck You Sucker - 9/10
My Name Is Nobody - 5/10
Once Upon a Time in America - 10/10

Some thoughts:

1. Man, the sound on Fistful sucks. I watched it with subtitles this time and enjoyed it more than ever before.
2. I always forget how excellent FAFDM is.
3. I wish rating scales could go to infinity for how good West and America are.
4. This was my first time watching My Name Is Nobody. The last 35 - 40 minutes or so are solid, Fonda's character is great, and Morricone's score is definitely a good one. But man... so much of this movie is bad, bad, bad. Anything slapstick here is embarrassingly unfunny, Terrence Hill is just plain awful throughout. I doubt I'll be watching it again.

What do you mean with the FOD subtitles? You couldn't understand the dialogue without subtitles? You needed English audio for the English subtitles?

Put a gun to my head, and tell me I can watch just one movie once before I die, it would probably be FAFDM.

Of course I disagree. The routine with the revolving dummy with the outstretched arms that Hill uses to clobber the baddies has me falling on the floor every time I watch it. In fact, thinking about it again, I might just have to put the Blu-ray on tonite . . .

His greatest moments on film, imho, are those in Un coeur en hiver (1992).

Even if you don't like any Hill scene, you should absolutely love every Fonda scene. There are so many incredible beautiful scenes in MNIN that it has a great replay value for me.

Actually there are only about 4 or 5 min in which the slapstick takes over in a wrong way, in which the balance between parody and twilight melancholy is shattered. Otherwise the comedy parts work very well.

Of course I disagree. The routine with the revolving dummy with the outstretched arms that Hill uses to clobber the baddies has me falling on the floor every time I watch it.

Well, actually, he he, this is one of them, of the shattering ones ...

No, RR is right on My Name is Nobody. It's a mess with a few decent scenes.

Born Again - 4/10 - Cheapo biopic of Chuck Colson, Watergate conspirator-turned-evangelical Christian. Dean Jones plays Colson with a bad Jimmy Stewart impression; various has-beens (Anne Francis, Dana Andrews) and B-listers (Raymond St. Jacques) fill supporting roles. Meant to be uplifting, it's dull and disingenuous.
