Brooklyn
- 7.5/10 - Fun, if slight romantic drama. Saorise Ronan is very good.
Wow. You really liked this??

A Simple Plan (1998)
- 9/10
Sam Raimi's resposne to
Fargo
, and it's just flat out excellent. Funny, touching, suspenseful, and even feels somewhat original.
Zootopia (2016)
- 8/10
Great animated noir sorta in the vein of
Who Framed Roger Rabbit
. Best 2016 movie I've seen so far. Funny Breaking Bad reference in there.

Ant-Man
- 7/10 - Yet another Marvel flick. At heart it's basically a variant on Iron Man, but playing it as a comic heist film makes it watchable. Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas are good, the villain is a cartoon douchebag, Rudd's buddies are irritating.

But in a good way.

Rewatch of
The Friends of Eddie Coyle
and
Divergent
- 5/10 - Bland YA adaptation, a mishmash of The Hunger Games and The Giver. Not painful to watch, but instantly forgettable.

What about The Friends of Eddie Coyle? That's a very good movie.
I watched that the day after a girl named Sharon broke up with me. I was trying to forget my troubles and get lost in a good movie, but then comes the scene in the Sharon train station and I was miserable all over again. Idiot had to name a town in Massachussets after the girl who broke up with me
Anyway, good movie

The Friends of Eddie Coyle
- 8/10 - Lots to enjoy here: the nuts-and-bolts depiction of blue-collar crime, the terse writing and seedy atmosphere, nice acting by Robert Mitchum and Peter Boyle. Only demerit is the score, which sounds like a cheap TV show.

49th Parallel (1941) 5.5/10
Groggy pit this in his top 20 list. I'd put it on this list of 20 worst movie accents of all time (Laurence Olivier spent a week with a French trapper to learn his accent. But he spends the movie doing what sounds like a Jamaican accent. So bad it's funny to watch).
The speechifying about Facism's evils? Maybe it was useful and necessary in 1940. Boring to me in 2016.
Nice score. Eric Portman was very good in what is really the lead role, even though he is fifth-billed. The Nazis characters are more fun to watch than the Canadians.
Maybe this movie had a good purpose to it in 1940, interesting historically, but bot an enjoyable watch for me now.

I'll stand by my high 8-9/10 rating but yeah, top 20 is over the top. Then again, I hadn't seen A Matter of Life and Death at that point.

You could be like n_l: maybe there aren't more than twenty movies with an 8-9/10 rating

Divergent: Insurgent
- 2/10 - Okay, this one sucks; it's The Hunger Games with the interesting parts surgically extracted. I'll skip the latest installment.
