From a Roman Balcony / La giornata balorda (1960) - 9/10. Jean Sorel spends a day looking for work. Amazing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7CfLcvh4BLw

SENILITÀ (1962) - 7/10. In the 1920s, a coquette (Cardinale) strings along a guy (Tony Franciosa) until he's twisted in knots. Meanwhile the guy's sister (Betsy Blair) goes insane due to sexual repression (or something). From an novel by Italo Svevo. In some ways it's similar to Proust's Swann's Way--but with characters of a lower social class. Cardinale is pretty amazing in this (a shame about her hair, though).

Les Dragueurs / The Chasers (1959) - 7/10. Jean-Pierre Mocky's debut about a night in the life of two Parisian skirt chasers. It's better than you'd think (and features some very hot female talent). The decadent party at the end seems to anticipate La Dolce Vita, but in this case things are kept interesting.

Ace in the Hole - 8.5/10 - Why do I love Billy Wilder's dramas and hate his comedies? Please tell me I haven't become drink. >:(

Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2004) - 8/10
A new act for each season, in a film spanning 50 or so years in just ninety minutes. Each act brings a huge tonal shift, but still manages to feel like a cohesive, poetic, often beautiful whole when all is said and done.

Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956)

I never really realized that this has to be the most noir (in spirit) of the 50s sci-fi: You get the visuals, those great small town 50s USA night time locations and the bum luck of the main character rekindling a romance with the woman of his (and every man's?)  dreams (Dana Wynter) only to be doomed almost instantly.

9.5/10

The Olive bluray transfer was solid, great in spots, but I was a little disappointed overall. Then again, I realize it was a relatively cheap production, so I get it. It's still worthy though.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre..

AGOSTINO (1962) 9/10. Agostino is a boy of about 10, vacationing in Venice with his beautiful mother, Ingrid Thulin. They are devoted to one another, but then John Saxon shows up and comes between them. Worse, Agostino hears for the first time about the facts of life. When he realizes that even his own mother is implicated, he is devastated. Who knew sex could be so traumatic? Bolognini adapts Moravia--again. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z9jQHeNkDzQ

Alexander Hamilton - 7/10 - Competent biopic with George Arliss as the Founding Father. Mostly focuses on the Reynolds Affair, because who needs all that political stuff.

I don't hate his comedies; I just don't bother watching them (or anyone else's)  ;)

Tennessee Johnson - 7/10 - Noble, inspiring story of how Andrew Johnson became America's greatest president by defying those evil, egalitarian Republicans and installing Jim Crow in the post-Civil War South. Naturally, the movie doesn't put it that way but an historically literate person can read between the lines. Van Heflin is Johnson, the noble plebeian turned president; Lionel Barrymore, a wicked Thaddeus Stevens.

It's Pat: The Movie (1994) - 4/10
Cited as one of the worst movies of the 90's / maybe ever ...but hey, it's not that bad. I laughed maybe 3 or 4 times. I watched it because one of my favorite bands, Ween, have a pretty big role in the story. Other than that, yeah, pretty fucking awful.

Beautiful Girls (1996) - 8/10
Very very good

One Wonderful Sunday (1947) - 7.25/10
Very good, light (and sometimes heavy) Kurosawa flick - but I'd say it loses at least a whole point for the amphitheater scene. Phew, people think the wedding in The Deer Hunter is too long? This must have lasted 20% of the movie. It was effective for a while...but come on.... move along.

I just saw KILLING THEM SOFTLY.

A damn fine movie, I even liked the "soundtrack" of the political speeches; then the whole movie gets flushed down the toilet with Brad Pitt's dumb speech at the end. This is a very good crime movie and if I ever re-watch it, press END before the last speech.

Like some idiot took The Godfather's "metaphor for American capitalism" just a tad too literally. This is a damn good movie, they basically coulda kept it exactly as is and just cut out the last speech.

Terrific performances up and down.

I'm just upset that they didn't include Bush's speech with his idiotic excuse for the Wall Street bailout: "I abandoned free-market principles to save the free market." I was waiting for that one!

HOPE & CHANGE!
