I am however regretting not having gone to see The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (which I've heard mixed reviews about, but at least wouldn't induce me to suicide) or even Australia again.

Mrs. Cusser just got NetFlix, we watched The Boy in the Striped Pajamas last night.  I thought it was quite good, and really showed differing beliefs of ordinary Germans during the war (as did The Book Thief, also very good).

Youre right, I can't comment on that. I bow to your years of wisdom and great experience in indulging the cinematic art form. I look forward to your La La Land 2/10 and your follow up critique of my taste and judgement
Sarcasm? That's new for you, isn't it?

I doubt very much that I'll see this film, so I'll have to disappoint you on that account. Of course, critiquing your taste and judgment I can do in my sleep, so you can certainly expect more of that. And when you make asinine comments like "La La Land feels less like homage to classic musicals and more like its own original piece" I will always call you out. See some fucking films.

Of course there's homage. Lots of it. All you need to do to know that is to watch the trailer. The key word is feels - in that the homage is not distracting as it would be in New York, New York or The Artist or Sin City or any other modern movie that revisits a dead genre. It's littered with classic homages but never overwhelms, this why it feels like it's own movie rather than what you'd expect to be a long tribute piece. Completely unique? Fuck no, but it's sure enough of itself to be "La La Land" and not  "a tribute to singin in the rain"

I'd love to see more films but I fear they'll be as bad as hacksaw ridge

There's always a risk. But even a negative experience is still an experience. Why insist on going through life as a know-nothing?

And theater and music and paintings.

DJ and I go to art museums, too. And Broadway. And in February, we will be at Lincoln Center for several Beethoven shows. (Carl Fisher directing the Budapest Festival Orchestra.) DJ is a well-rounded, cultured guy. Don't let his seeming coarseness fool you. It's all an act  ;)

Nah, titoli is the guy with the act.

Hard Eight (20th Cent) - 8/10. Watching this last night on FilmStruck I suddenly realized--this is a clever reimagining of Bob le Flambeur! But without the casino caper at the end. Which fits right in with your Late Century Era of Diminished Expectations meme, nicht wahr? Of course, casting Philip Baker Hall was money in the bank. The rest of the cast isn't bad, either--even the awful John C. Reilly is credible in some scenes. Great score (the song under the end credits isn't very good, but at least it signals the fact this is a Christmas movie). All of which brings forth the question: PTA, what happened, man? Where did it all go wrong? I blame PowerRR, of course. Somehow that creepy little shit has been able to psychically influence a potentially great director and rob him of his promise. Some crimes cannot be punished often enough.

It's actually Ivan Fischer conducting. Not sure why I wrote "Carl Fischer directing"  :o

Manchester by the Sea (2016) Joan got her first SAG screener DVD the other day watched it last night, a watchable dysfunctional family melodrama, starring Casey Affleck and Ben O'Brien, a 7/10, but nothing I'd ever watch again.

Moonlight - 4/5

The only problems I have with it are the 3rd chapter where it starts to be telling instead of showing and the soundtrack.
