Hell and High Water (2016). Target was selling the blu for 10 bucks. 10 bucks for a 10/10 film! You also get the DVD and the code for the digital download. Idiots who saw this in the cinema paid more and got to take home nothing! The supplements aren't bad: the Q&A with the director and cast doesn't have a lot of info, but the director did name 3 films that were in his mind while shooting: Thunderbolt & Lightfoot, Fat City, and The Last Picture Show--all with Jeff Bridges! The T&L reference goes some way to explaining the use of female actresses in the new film, to say nothing of all the male bonding scenes. 10 bucks!

Figured DJ wpild love that one. Another minimalist "nothing new" modern western!

But really it is great. I'd go 8/10 or maybe slightly higher.

Another nut heard from. In fact, isn't this the same guy who didn't like Dillinger? What have you got against the 70s, man?

Hell in the Pacific (1968) - 7.5/10

Didn't think it was great (never watched it before), but very influental, solidly acted and with a charm hard to match today.

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) - 7/10. Just watched the new UK blu and it looks fabulous. Lots of extras, many of them made in 2002 (was there some kind of DVD special edition that came out then?). One is a documentary from a French woman who goes in search of Laurie Zimmer, the film's lead actress (who subsequently had no career and dropped out of sight). It takes her 2 years to find the woman, and it turns out that all she had to do was email her at lauriezimmer@hotmail.com and they would have connected (don't know if the address is still valid). No one on her crew thought to do that? Oh well, then she wouldn't have been able to make the movie. The search for the forgotten actress idea would make a good premise for a feature.

You get the Deluxe edition with a CD of the soundtrack? I sure would have liked to have picked up that copy.

loved this, one of my favorites all year. Long for its genre and lack of plot? For sure, but I was never bored.

Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari (1920) - 8/10. Almost 100 years old and it still has a kind of weird power. The 2014 restoration/ transfer gets a 10/10. The new David Kalat commentary gets a 10/10. The disc authoring (David Mackenzie) gets a 10/10. The steelbook case is a thing of beauty: 11/10.

What has got time to do with "power"? Méliès work is even older and still is just as "powerful".

Cause many works lose their power when they get older.

Not only works, people. I remember when titoli could mount a coherent argument, just a few years ago.

Not talking about those, like you, who never could.
