Walkabout (1971) - 4/10

From the typical 70s cheap pseudo-deep psycho(logical) motivation streams a river of gratuitous and mostly deviatedly misplaced sexuality as well as turbo-exaggerated and above all unnecessary violence (mostly towards animals) in a series of unbalancely connected miniatures (though that's a compliment to refer to 'em as such), that is in absolute contrast to the vivid and en-captivating Aussie Outback mystique imagery and atmosphere, desperately trying to fight through.

John Wick Chapter 2 (2017) - And . . . it's not very good (yeah, yeah, I should have gone to Lego Batman). Bad photography, badly directed, badly plotted. The Keanu Kurse continues to operate: no good sequels may be made with him aboard. All the best moments are in the trailer. There will be a John Wick 3, apparently. I still like the first one, but Chapter 2 gets a 5/10.

Glory Alley (1952) 5/10

In this movie, Ralph Meeker says, "There are some fights you can't run away from." Sounds a lot like the more-famous line Randolph Scott would say several years later in the Budd Boetticher Westerns, "Some things you can't ride around."

Brimstone (2016/2017): Set in Western times, the movie's about a mute woman, Dakota Fanning, who is chased by a reverend, Guy Pearce, because of their shared past. Told in 4 parts, that go back in the past to reveal more details about their twisted, grim, perverted and horrific past, this is a beautifully shot but intense, bleak, brutal and violent western/thriller. 8+/10

Silence (2016) 5/10?
Pretty boring, mostly beautiful to watch apart from a corny shot here and there. Garfield is ok after all. The voice over is often used in an amateurish way, adding nothing to what can be seen on screen, which is weird given that Scorsese almost single handedly invented and perfected what a good voice over can be in his previous works.
A tad hard to rate since I didn't really understood what was actually discussed in the last part of the film. I have the feeling the whole thing is built on a simple truth about religion that Scorsese already expressed in a single line in Mean Street.

Big House, U.S.A. (1955): Combining a prison break movie with a documentary-style procedural about the kidnapping of a kid, it's a solid and noir-ish movie that might not stand out too much, but ticks enough of the boxes to warrant a viewing. 7/10

I've always said it was gonna suck. I'm pretty surprised it didn't suck that much.
I'll never see it again though.

Yeah probably, but we all saw it coming.
I'm still wondering about what is actually expressed in the movie, its message. The fact that I'm as far as you can be from being a religious person probably explains it.
Tht being said, it was boring but not like excruciatingly boring like Mr D&D would like us to believe :)

First viewing?

Yes, yes, yes, but I watched some scenes already twice, and before the film I watched the 18 min Whiplash short film, which he made the year before.

I haven't seen it yet, and at this point I'll probably end up waiting for the Blu-ray. But from what I've heard about the film, isn't there a kind of homage to Bresson going on, at least in parts of it? If so, that might account for the way in which voice-over is used.

From time to time, Scorsese likes to ape those he admires. Thus, The Age of Innocence is his Kubrick picture; Gangs of New York is his Leone film. If I recall correctly, there's a segment of Bringing Out the Dead in which he channels Oliver Stone. When I finally see Silence I will be watching with the homage-making in mind.
