The issue you have with the character remains the same with the actual actor Jean-Pierre Leaud. I don't understand how the tough street child from the 400 blows became that guy:

Funeral in Berlin (60s) - 7/10. Not as good as I remembered, but better than many in the spy genre.  I just re-read The Ipcress File and enjoyed it so much I wanted more Len Deighton but didn't want to watch the film of the book (which essentially betrays the source to a great degree--although I still enjoy it). So I settled for the follow-up film adaptation which, IIRC, follows its original better. Nobody does sarcasm better than Deighton, and in the books you get a stinger a page--a ratio not observed in the adaptations.
Watched the DVD again--man, I wish someone would put out a nice Blu-ray of this. This time I studied the compositions more closely--although Guy Hamilton directed, he does some very non-Guy Hamilton tricks, copying things that Sidney J. Fury did in the first film (for example, filming in scope an actor's back with just a bit open on the side so the tiny face of another actor can be seen--so as to enhance the otherwise pedestrian conversations we're listening to). Gonna have to watch The Ipcress File again now.

Sonatine (1993) - 9/10. My second-favorite Yakuza film, now out on Blu in Japan with an excellent transfer. Kitano seems to be going for a Jarmusch-meets-McDonagh thing, only no one knew who McDonagh was in 1993. Still, this would make an excellent double bill with In Bruges.
just watched this, ageee with the score. Excellent. What’s your favorite yakuza film?

Some stuff watched over the weekend...

Affair in Havana (1957): Businessman Raymond Burr blames his wife Sara Shane for being confined to a wheelchair, while she's involved with jazz pianist John Cassavetes, who's invited by Burr to come play at his musical fest. Not bad, not good, but surprisingly chilly for a love triangle thriller set in Cuba. 6-/10

I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives In The House (2016): Nurse Lucy Wilson moves in with bedridden horror writer Paula Prentiss to take care of her. She soon finds that one story might have been inspired by events taken place in Prentiss's house over a century ago. It feels like a 19th century haunted house short story set in modern times, and it's initially very atmospheric, brooding and creepy, but there's not enough story for the length of the movie, so it falls flat in the 2nd half. 6/10

Requiem (2018): Cellist Lydia Wilson's mother kills herself in front of Wilson. Wilson then discovers her mother, and herself, might not be what she thought she was, and travels to Wales with her pianist Joel Fry to uncover the truth about her past, and the disappearance of a girl, 23 years ago. British mini-series, slow but tense, twisty and intriguing, with a dash of British pagan/folk horror thrown in. The ending is a bit meh tho... 7/10

Wind River (2017) Modern Western, A veteran tracker (Jeremy Renner) with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service helps the FBI (Elizabeth Olsen) to investigate the murder of a young Native American woman on the Wind River Reservation. Directed by Taylor Sheridan. With Graham Greene, Kelsey Asbille, Tantoo Cardinal, Apesanahkwat, Tokala Black Elk. Beautiful cinematography. 8/10

I saw it in the plane or on the US Netflix I don't remember. Probably a bit of both.

I didn't like some parts of it at first but the more the story progresses the better the movie becomes.

In the end I think Elizabeth Olsen's character was totally cliché and pointless. I want to see more of the kind of relationship we've got between Jeremy Renner and the father of the victim than any interaction between Olsen and anybody. I have nothing against the actress but remove her character from the film and it's all for the better. Nothing really changes, by the way, which is quite telling.

The shootout is nice.

Cartel (long version) 7/10
First viewing. Very good and original for a movie about the cartels. Terrific by the book yet modern yet classy yet audacious yet noirish yet colorful cinematography. It's Ridley Scott's most Fincheresque side. Unfortunately, the dialogues aren't as smart and cool as they sound. Top notch performances all over the place, although Cameron Diaz is probably miscasted.

Are you talking about The Counselor? Because I can't find anything about The Cartel.

Yes I am! Sorry I didn't realize the film had a different title in English. The Counselor is a much better title than the French one.

Agree on The Counselor being a better title. That movie is a strange one. It has this all star cast but the script is by Cormac McCarthy, a guy whose dialogue doesn't necessarily work on the screen, so its a weird watching experience listening to this nonsense and yet its still watchable. I think about that movie and the fact that they managed to turn a rap lyric such as 'They ain't trippin' on me, they wanna fuck my car' into an actual scene involving Cameron Diaz, who I agree is probably miscast, fucking the windshield of a car. What a weird movie. I should probably rewatch it.

The U.S. blu comes with both cuts of the film and a very interesting bonus feature, the extended cut with commentary by Didley that temporarily exits the film to do EPK-type things every time such things are cued by a location or a character or whatever. It sure makes for a long evening!

The four I've seen that he directed ("Toi, le venin", "Les salauds vont en enfer", "Le goût de la violence" and of course "Cemetery without Crosses") are all really great. As a director, he was and still is ridiculously underrated.

I've never seen this one by Hossein:
