I'm just interested, as you are quite able to describe such flaws. And I can't think of much flaws in the film, at least not ones that are really distracting.
I need to gibe it another shot in order to be able to answer with some precision (I saw it only once, years ago, on a very small TV). I remember seeing a very interesting movie, but also one that felt long and left me cold the whole time. Also, remove a couple of scene (and Willem Dafoe), and you've got your typical Oscar bait melodrama. In the end, I have a much better and stronger memory of the book
