Great Japanese horror anthology movie (and probably the longest horror movie ever!) with beautiful sets and great actors.

I caught the first 50 minutes of the movie before falling asleep on Halloween night.
I was very tired and it was a slow paced affair. No matter how good a movie is that is always a recipe for disaster.
I plan to buy the dvd when I can.
I conked out in the second story about the "snow lady" (which seems to have been ripped off by the Tales from the Darkside movie).
Anybody else seen it?

The original Japanese title is Kaidan but you're right, I should have the english title up there too.
I saw the film on TCM.
The uncut version is on youtube.

I know. The Japanese title reads as KAIDAN much like all the series of ghost films utilize the word Kaidan in their titles like the famous GHOST OF YOTSUYA aka TOKAIDO YOTSUYA KAIDAN (1959). Much like GODZILLA (US title) as GOJIRA (Japanese title) or MOTHRA to the Japanese translation of MOSURA. The movie has always been known as KWAIDAN here.

I saw the two hour cut on TCM some time ago, very good. I really don't remember all that much about any paricular episode though.

Claudia, we need you to appear in LOST COMMAND. It's gonna revolutionize the war genre. What did you think of the script?

I don't see on youtube about that one being uncut, but the UK DVD which comes with a 72 page book has the full 183 minute version. The Criterion disc is the international 165 minute cut. The US release (or some prints of it) was missing the 'Lady of the Snow' episode. The most expensive Japanese movie ever at the time. Bombed miserably upon first release but grew into a sensation after being released elsewhere. A seriously spooky movie. The Shaw Brothers adapted a portion of the 'Hoichi, the Earless' episode for the denouement of their excellent DIABOLIQUE inspired horror picture, HEX (1980).

The MoC DVD version (the one available in the UK) is not only longer than the CC, it has better colors. It's the one to own.

I guess you could add up the minutes but if you want to be technical, the Criterion isn't TRULY CUT as it's the complete version of the International release since the original US release was missing the 'Lady of the Snow' segment.

Even with "Yuki Ona" put back in, the International version is still shorter than the Japanese version, and it's the Japanese version that MoC has released.
