This is a very underrated Film Noir.  It has one of my favorite Richard Widmark performances in it.  I rate this one a 8 out of 10...

It's a 9/10 for me. Skip the atrocious remake.

One of my all-time favorites. The British blu has a complete alternate cut, very very different.

And different music, right?

Eddie Muller discusses this in his comments following the movie, which I linked to above.

If you can describe the differences between the two versions, it would be appreciated  Wink

Yes, a different score, a different opening scene between Harry and his girlfriend, the subplot with the girlfriend’s neighbor is expanded, there’s a scene between Harry and the owner of the gym he’s leasing, and the ending is different. The British version is about 5 min longer, but certain scenes are different takes etc so the differences amount to more than 5 minutes. The U.S. version is definitely superior but if you’re a huge fan of the film like I am the British version is pretty cool to see. I believe the criterion blu also has the British cut. I have both blus because they have different bonus features.

To make things even slightly more confusing there is also a THIRD version with its own extra scenes etc but that hasn’t been released. And the original trailer has a few shots not in either released version Smiley

Here’s a link describing the THIRD version:
