He's careful not to warn against tossing away artistry, I note.

So the movie is totally bombing at the US box office right now, which makes me sad for Marty. Every single of his passion projects has been bombing since the early 1980's. That most be depressing to be ignored for your religion related stuff while getting awards and glory with The Departed (which is a near masterpiece but that's off topic).

Gangs of New York was also a passion project and financial failure and subpar film (despite having some very good elements, unlike SILENCE, which is crap top to bottom.)

Exactly. I don't think any of his post Taxi Driver passion project worked out well.

RAGING BULL?

What are we defining as "passion project"?

He didn't want to do Raging Bull, it was more of DeNiro's passion project.

I'm not sure anything prior to his 1976 Golden Palme can be called "passion project" since he was just doing what he could at that point... Basically, I would call passion project every project for which most meetings with producers went this way:

"MR SCORSESE! I love your work. What can we do together?"
"I have this weird and very personal project I've been trying to do for years... Ok first, fun fact: did you know I wanted to be a priest before I became a filmmaker?"
"Lol, we're not funding this, let's do ANOTHER mafia movie with De Niro and the little guy from Home Alone, ok?"

although it sounds morbid - was this scorseses last shot at a true passion project?

On the bright side (for him), it seems like he pulled it off without any real studio interference. Any sane studio would have chopped this down at least 45 minutes

WIth this kind of budget, maybe. But if he's willing to do $10 millions films, he can probably do one per year for a decade.

Really?

Who's That Knocking on My Door and especially Mean Streets should be more passionate than Taxi Driver.

he wanted to make this movie for a very long time, but once he did make it, didn't he have freedom here to act as he wished without studio interference?

Well, I'd take "The Mission" over this. However, that did have the benefit of Iguaçu Falls as the backdrop (one of the most stunningly beautiful places in the world) and Morricone's score (one of his best). Nonetheless I did enjoy it, but was not blown away.

There was a beautiful piece of slo-mo towards the end of the film - the part where Asano's character lifts his hand in sync with the rising flame behind him as they pull the bodies up.

The most grating aspect was undeniably why Garfield and Driver seemed to be trying to do Portuguese-accented English (we are supposed to assume the English spoken is actually Portuguese) while Neeson simply sticks to his own Irish accent. I would have preferred either subtitled Portuguese speaking actors, or simply English in whatever accent the actor naturally uses with no faked accents at all.
